I have searched high and low for this book in ebook format with no success. Has anyone found anything about this? I have the huge book that I can read, but I much prefer ebook format.
The latest I have heard is that there are no legally available versions of LOTR in electronic format. Too bad - if there was ever a book that would be convenient to be able to easily search while you are reading it, LOTR is one.
Unfortunately this is the case with a lot of popular books,
it is pretty sad, i own a lot of books that I would much rather
read in on my PDA, ... Instead I resort to finding old
free ebooks on http://www.gutenberg.net/index.shtml
Of course they dont have popular newer books, but they
have a lot of old classics .. I enjoy just picking random ones out
and reading them..
came out it was easy to find Lord of the Rings on the internet for FREE in .lit format for microsoft reader. It was in the public domain, it was removed so that mucho money could be made. I still have a few different versions of the ebook on my CD collection (archives of old ebooks) one which has all three books in one file.

So they were public domain then they took them out? How did they manage that? Did they do some minor editing and claim it was "new" material?
I've read somewhere else that LOTR was given away as a promotion several years ago, but is no longer available. In the US I think that LOTR has never been in the public domain, based on my search of the copyright office (copyright obtained 1954 and renewed in 1982).

They just renewed the copyright.

I "bought" them a while back from a disreputable web site. They were taken off a few days later. But I am interpreting it as legal under fair use. I have at least one copy of all of the books already in paperback. But I prefer to read on my handheld. (unfortunately these are not the greatest copies, a fair number of mistakes, probably OCR errors.)
