Did you ever consider using something like WebCT? All of the assignments are posted online, submitted online (no arguments about when a paper was turned in!) and graded online. You can make comments directly on the student's assignment and allow them to download the edited copy, or you can post the comments online separately. Since it runs on the web, any computer with internet access can get to it (well, there is the small problem that Pocket Internet Explorer can't access WebCT sites).
Added benefits: you can't lose the assignments, leave them home by accident, or spill coffee on them. Plus, once the grades are assigned they go directly into an onlline gradebook that students can access (password protected, of course).
I know that some folks have used WebCT on our campus. I saw a demonstration some years ago and was uniterested at the time. I might take another look. Still, I'd like to have a way of grading on the Ax.

Ahhh.............That's the beauty of using the Quote Button!

Our college currently uses a system called Blackboard which seems to be very useful. I am a GTA and have 'grader' access to the assignments submitted online. There is also an electronic 'dropbox' to submit documents in any format. The process is extremely easy and portable as I have been using my Axim to grade assignments using a Wifi card. Additionally, students can enter any email address they want and the list is automatically generated for the professor with the students actual identity provided. The grades are accessible at any time, any place, for both students and professors. One comment about emailing grades...I believe our campus has a policy that you can't email grades due to privacy considerations. I guess they think the emails could be hacked or something.
Sorry to jump in on the conversation....

No problem--I could use the feedback.
I actually now adhere to a strict "no e-mailing grades" policy in part because of privacy and in part because I have, in the past, been harrassed by students trying to get their grades before the papers are returned or the report cards mailed out. It is particularly bad at the end of the semester when, I suspect, students are trying to figure out whether they have to hide anything from their parents. So I'd rather not e-mail grades anyway. The Blackboard or WebCT system sounds much better, but can't they be hacked, too?
I don't know if I would be able to get at the system via wifi because our network admin won't allow wireless access to our network.

As with any secure system, they can be hacked by someone determined enough. I attend PennState and use their WebBased system called Angel. Not only can you use it for grades and assigments, you can give quizes and tests. It has it's own built in email and chat functions. As a student, I find it extremely useful. If you have anything like that at your disposal, that should handle all your issues, plus you students won't have to download anything.
Perhaps the web based systems are the best way. I'll have to see if we are still running them. If so, we must have a policy for the consequences of having the system hacked.

Hmmm...you could still access Blackboard because it is an online service. By the way, why doesn't the admin. allow wireless access? I mean really...
Just my opinion, offer it (ebook format) as an 'encouraged' option but not required. I remember my first experiences with Blackboard were infuriating! My professor would only allow us to hand in or view class assignments via the internet. You had to have access or you couldn't do anything for the class AND you had to find your own printer and paper for even the syllabus! I used to wonder why my tuition payments didn't allow me three pieces of the school's paper. It also made me think the prof. was lazy because everytime we asked a question in class he would refer us to the internet! Maybe he was trying to force us into his technologically enlightened world but it didn't sit well with most of us.
I am not very good with the forum lingo but I think this is when people write something like this.... JM2(and then the 'cent' sign which you have to be really smart to know how to use)
