Oops, sorry, just had a peek at your location in the side bar there and see that you are not allowed to use CLIT. It's legal in Canada and most of the rest of the world, but in the US the powers-that-be decreed that it contravened the copyright laws by cracking Digital Rights Management encryption, and as such could land you in jail for using it to convert ebooks into a more user-friendly format. Sorry again, I shouldn't have mentioned it. You're probably allowed to carry a gun to the corner store... I'm not, so we're even.

I'd suggest, I guess, that you read the ebook on your wife's device. If she'll share. If Microsoft isn't letting you use yours properly for some mysterious reason, you'll just have to work around it, and if borrowing her PPC to read a bible is all that the lawmakers leave available then work with that.

Wow, these dumb laws only affect rule followers. Stupid pirates are always getting ahead. That is okay. They will get busted soon enough.

This thread is a bit elderly. I am wondering if it is still valid. I am unable to find the file: Mircosoft Activation.unload. And what's wrong with just copying the files to an SD card?

Thanks

I've no idea why you cannot find the unload file... but it doesn't matter. An unload file is just for uninstalling things, having nothing to do with other functions.

I've no idea whu you couldn't copy the files to an SD card. Why not? I did. That's where my backup copies of those activation files is, safe for when I might need them.

Yep. Mine are filed away on an SD card also.

On the other hand, having copied them back into the Windows directory, I now have MS Reader activated for MS Reader. But I can read the books and that's what counts.

Hey thanks for the tip man. I hate having to reactivate everytime I do a hard reset.

Saving Microsoft Reader Activation
I tried to follow the instructions given in this message and ran into a few problems that perhaps someone can advise me on.

I could only find four files in Windows. They were Secrep (dat), Secrep (doc), Secrep.dll, and Secrepid.

I could NOT find Secrep.xml nor Microsoft Activation.unload. I checked thoroughly and they did not exist in my windows directory. Just the four files mentioned above were there.

I went ahead and made a folder within My documents and pasted the above four programs into.

If needed, will Activation still take place if I move these four files back to Windows? I do not have the other two files as mentioned above.

Has there been a change with the files in Microsoft Reader Activation since the last update? Perhaps someone can provide me with some guidance.

Thanks much!

Yes, just those four files is fine. I found the same as you did, no secrep.xml or the .unload file but when I restored the files I did have after a hard reset MS Reader was still activated.

There hasn't been any change with MS Reader for a couple of years and it really shows. It barely supports VGA devices (*really* stupidly large font sizes) and has a lot of issues with books on SD or CF card in that if the card takes to long to re-register with the system when it comes out of standby then MS Reader will whine like a schoolgirl until you exit it and reopen the book, almost *every* other ebook type application I've seen handles this better than MS Reader.

It also has a very perverse book selection system that is an absolute nightmare if you have more than 5 books loaded on to your device... which I often do, my CF card has about 50 books ready for me to read at any given time...

Might I recommend Amber Convert LIT (http://www.processtext.com/abclit.html) to convert your books to another format and something like Haalireader (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/pocketpc/) for a lightweight book reader. If you use Haalireader then it supports the FB2 format the Amber can put out.

Not to totally necro this post here, but I did want to confirm for anyone following after me, this trick works on WM6.

You cannot activate Reader if you are WM6 because the website doesn't recognize your OS as bing newer then WM2002. Go figure. Anyway, I followed this little trick taking my activation from my WM5 Axim to my WM6 Mogul.

This is really starting to become an issue and I may stop purchasing MS books. I have spent hundreds in books and the idea that some day I am going to lose them over this silly activation stuff is annoying to no end.

To make it worse, the people I know that use pirated copies and such... they have no such worries of issues EVER. Talk about punishing us good guys.

Moving Activation from one PPC to another?
I wondered if there's a trick to using this method to move the activation from one Axim X51v to another.

I copied the files as described (couldn't find the *.unload file, but that doesn't seem to be a deal breaker), and the splash screen now says "Activated for Microsoft Reader." So far so good...

However...

When I try to open a DRM-protected LIT file, Reader crashes. Poof, disappears. Bombs out. "Exits unexpectedly."

Thoughts? Is this method only good for backing up and restoring activation on the same device?

Yes the activation is device specific. I tried to copy my activation from my
X5 to my X50V but it would not open my DRM-protecteted books. So after activating my X50V I created another folder to have on hand for future setbacks.
