Converting Doc and Other files into E-Books

Converting Doc and Other files into E-Books

The WWW is a wonderful thing and if you do a diligent Google search you will be amazed at the amount of literature and text that you will find that is either already a book or text that you would like to be able to read on your Axim at your leisure or a business document that you need to carry with you.

After hundreds of conversions of documents I consider myself to be something of a Pro at this and thought I might post this procedure to help others that may benefit from my acquired skills, humble is my watch word of course.

What you need to do it my way….
MS WORD. Most business people have access to it and many home users by now have it as well. You will also need the Free (My favorite word) Lit converter for MS Word found here http://www.microsoft.com/reader/deve...loads/rmr.asp.
Once you download and install this converter the battle is half over.

The procedure I use is as follows:
Once I identify the material that I want to convert I set up a Folder with a name that makes sense for me to be able to always remember what I have put in it. Since I convert a lot of “found” literature I usually name the folder after the author or subject matter.
Open MS Word.
Open a new Blank Document.
Now the real time saving tips are to use the MS shortcuts.
Open the Document that you want to copy into MS Word.
Control A to highlight all text.
Control C to copy all text
Return to the Blank MS Word document.
Use Control V to paste all of the text into the new document
At this point, the text is in the document and you will probably notice that the format may be all over the page…not to worry we can fix that.
Next step is to again Use Control A to highlight all of the text.
Depending on the version of MS Word and the way you have your tool bars configured you may need to adjust this process a little but with my set up I have the formatting tool bar turned on. You should see a drop down tab with the word “Normal” in the box. Click the drop down and select “Clear Formatting”. Don’t worry if it takes a few seconds to do this.
Then look to the right of the “B” which is the bold button and you should see 3 boxes that have lines in them. One of them has the lines perfectly aligned. Click this button and it will align the text to center. Believe me this is important if you want to have your E-Book symmetrical as you read it.
Once this has been accomplished you’re almost done.

When you download and installed the lit converter it should have placed a new button on your tool bar, a small ‘r” with 3 green ticks around it. When you click this button the process of converting your text starts. The conversion process will auto save your document in MS Word and you may need to browse to the correct folder but that is done via pop up window and the directions are pretty clear. You will have an opportunity to save the Book with a name, author and it will show you the default lit name. Once you click OK, the process runs and your will get a pop up asking if you want to open the book in the PC version of Reader. I don’t as a rule do this.
Once you have made the book it’s a simple matter to save it to your Axim via your preferred method.
Some of you may think that I have taken this to a simpleton’s level of understanding but there are a lot of people that may benefit form this. Hope so.
I know that there are other ways to accomplish this but this works for me and you don't need to get fancy or complicated nor spend a lot of money doing it.
Happy Reading.

:D

Hmm. I was confused when I read the title because .LIT files are e-books. I think you mean convert .DOC files to e-books?

If you don't have a recent version of MS Word with the .LIT converter, you can also view this thread for other free utilities to create .LIT ebooks.
