MS Reader Very Slow At Opening File
I'm using Microsoft Reader to open an eBook, size 315K.
It takes literally 2 minutes to get to the front cover of the book (there are no fancy graphics on the front page), and a further 2 minutes to then open the book and begin reading.
I'm using an Axim Basic.
Does this delay seem normal to other users? How long does it usually take from starting up MS Reader to being able to begin reading? What factors influence the speed with which a book loads (for example is the file size more important, or is it the number of pages?)
Cheers,
Ceri

I think it may have something to do with both the size of the book and where you have it stored. I have a number of large books, 4k-5k pages range, stored on a sd card. It takes a long time to open and an even longer time to search for some bit of text.

I to noticed a long delay in opening books on my Axim. Over-clocking my processor before opening the book takes care of the problem, and it actually loads fast now. I use Pocket Hack Master to increase the speed of my 400 MHz Axim to 472. I don't leave it at 472 MHz all the time, just when I need more speed. I also keep my books on a storage card, which increases the load time.
Not sure what you processor speed is, but when mine is in 200 MHz mode, it takes a really long time to load a book from the storage card. If you use MS Reader alot, you might want to check into Pocket Hack Master or another similar program.

Thanks for the feedback folks, much appreciated. Think I might stick to good old paper and ink for the time being, and leave the Axim for the things it does best!
Cheers,
Ceri

Don't get discouraged
I use my Axim to read a lot. I currently have over 300 books on SD cards and when I have to travel to Europe it is great. Also I use MS Reader to convert many of my business documents to the reader format because I don't liek the functionality of the MS Word for the reader. For me a little wait is not a killer when offset by the benifits of using the reader functioality of the AX.

That's my problem then. Most of my books are those that I converted myself.

Are you converting them using the "Read In Microsoft Reader" plugin for Word? I seem to remember reading somewhere that ebooks created via this method can have loading problems. Have you tried using Readerworks for your .lit conversions? It comes in a Standard version that's freeware.

Thanks for the conversion tips. However, the file I was trying to open was a .lit file I downloaded from a free ebook site, I hadn't converted it. Of course there's no way of knowing whether the file had converted previously.
Since starting this thread I have experimented with many more ebooks, and I have to say that on the whole the load-times are not as bad as I first assumed. Seems that it was just bad luck that the first couple of books I tried took ages. Looks like my faith may be restored... :)

Converting
I personaly do not have any more problems with books I have converted as opposed to the ones I have downloaded already converted. In fact most of them open faster. I have posted a method of converting that I use, on the E-books forum thread, and I find it easy if a little time consuming.
Size does matter. The larger the book the longer it takes on my AX. I have learned that the more files in a subfolder there are does slow the process somewhat. I have a 512 SD card and have my books stored under each author with seperate folders. When I have a more than 3 or 4 it takes longer so I clear them out and keep them stored on my computer or another SD card for easy transfer at a later date.
I have tried several different methods of converting and used most of the different tools available and still fall back to MS WORD and the MS Reader converter plug in as my tool of choice.
Theres no limit to what you can find on the internet in text format that can be converted. While I have not counted how many articles and books I have converted (For my personal use) but I would guess it is in the general area of 100 or so.
Happy Reading
:D

I installed the A01 ROM upgrade and it has dramatically increased the speed at which the ebooks open. Now an 1.5 MB ebook opens in 30 seconds, as opposed to a couple of minutes. Of course, part of is because the newest MS Reader is now a part of the ROM, so both MS Reader and the ebook no longer have to open from the SD card. The A01 ROM did also increase the access speed to my SD card, from .23 mbps to .74 mbps. Of course, this seems to be a far cry from the Simpletech Pro-X's advertised 10mbps burst speed.
