Open-Source alternative to MS Reader?

After having played with Microsoft Reader, I'm not really that impressed, I find it bloated and slow.

Does anyone know a good open-source document format, and accompanying reader for Pocket PC? I'm reluctant to go to the trouble of converting all my existing documents into .lit, .pdf or .doc, when who knows how these proprietary formats will be supported in the future (and at what price).

Cheers,

Ceri

p.s. Ideally something a little more sophisticated than .txt ;)

Personally I prefer TXT .. and if you have the write
viewer then they are not that 'un-sophisticated..'

I use TXT files and uBook http://www.freewareppc.com/docs/book.shtml

Pete, that's EXACTLY what I'm looking for!

It occured to me after starting this thread that the HTML format already answered some of my requirements, i.e. open-source, "sophisticated" text formatting, etc. However, the default viewer (IE) is pretty lousy for reading large documents.

This uBook app on the other hand is great!

* Reads numerous file formats (.PDB, .PRC, .TXT, .RTF, .HTML, and a number of image formats)

* Loads large files in the background so you can begin reading right away (unlike the delays I experienced with MS Reader)

* Has all the annotation, bookmarking type features you'd expect with an e-book reader.

All in all, I'm hooked!

Thanks for the suggestion Pete,

Ceri

I have U-book as well and am very impressed with it. Before I found it I went through the hassle of converting .txt files to .lit files for the Microsoft Reader. I recommend U-book for anyone who wants a good reader for their text files (I haven't tried reading other formats with it as yet though).

Compression is one of the neater features with µbook. Being able to format in TXT or HTML (using a PPC based text editor if you like - I do), then compress it in a ZIP or RAR archive down to a rather smaller size (especially if you use BMP images inline with the HTML, as BMP files compress beautifully to almost nothing), then a huge number of ebooks may be stored on a relatively small card. µbook has no trouble reading inside compressed files.
