Unfortunately, those free ebooks that were offered so far were indeed "free", i.e. public domain and freely available at Gutenberg.

From what was said in this post, the books are free online already. The site is using the free e-books in order to get you to purchase something else in the future/at same time. There are so many free e-book sites that I don't see the need unless the books are really new releases. I can now checkout e-books at my school's library (all of these e-books are academic).

This is a great site though... even if the ebooks free already, never know what you might need/find on e-book sites.

There was a star trek book earlier this week. I assume that it is not a "free" book like the Dickens. So there may be some other books that are not public domain.
