MS Reader activation problems

I just purchased some E-Books for my wife for Christmas. I tried to download them and a window said my MS Reader was not activated. I went to the MS web site to activate it and a window said my PPC OS was too old and it needed to be 2002 or newer. This is a Dell Axim X50V which is running 2003SE. Anyone have any ideas what is wrong? I called MS customer support 4 times and got nowhere.

I thought it was just me getting this and I was about to go mad. I have the same problem and I followed some steps MS gave me about deleting a specific ActiveX control but I still get the same error you get.

Also, when I installed MS Reader in ROM, I had to create a new shortcut in the Start Menu as the one in there would not work. I don't know if that has something to do with the issue.

I am also trying to get my activation quota reset as I have gone over the allowance and can't access any of my purchased ebooks until I get quota reset and get the MS site/my X50v to actually work whichever is the fault.

It can be moved to one of those places but it's less work just to put it in main memory. It's still not perfect though, I've run into some issues that are discussed elsewhere. Surprisingly they seem to have gone away by themselves. I'm betting my issues result from not using the laptops Reader to tranfer them.

I had the same problem---

Here is what Microsoft had me do, and it worked-----

Step 1: Reinstall ActiveSync

====================

1. Click Start, click Settings, choose Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs.

2. Highlight ActiveSync, and then click Remove or Add/Remove.

3. Go to the following URL, and then follow the instructions on the screen to download and install ActiveSync 3.7.1.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Step 2: Refresh the ActiveX Control for activation
====================

A: Backup the cookies:
----------------------------------------

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. On the File menu, click Import and Export.

3. Click Next.

4. Select "Export Cookies", click Next.

5. Select the path and input the file name, click Next.

6. Click Finish.

7. Click OK on the popup window. It will prompt "successfully exported cookies!".

B: Clean the cookies and remove the activation component
----------------------------------------

1. Close all the Internet Explorer windows.

2. Right click the Internet Explorer icon on the Desktop, and then click Properties.

3. Click the "Settings" button under "Temporary Internet files", and then click "View Objects".

4. Right click "DASWebDownload Class", and then choose Remove. (Important)

5. Close the "Downloaded Program Files" window.

Note: If it does not exist, please ignore it and go to the next steps.

6. On the Internet Properties window and click "Delete Files". Click Yes/OK to confirm.

7. Click the Clear History button, and then click Yes/OK to clear your history.

8. Click the Delete Cookies button, click Yes/OK. (Important)

9. Click the Security tab, click on Internet, click Default Level, and then move the slider to set the level as Medium-low. After that, click Apply. Perform the same steps for each content zone (Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, etc.).

10. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Restore Defaults button.

11. Click OK to close all windows.

12. Reboot the computer.

Step 3: Download the latest version of the Reader installation file and install it
================================

1. To ensure you are using the latest version of Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC, let's connect to the following hyperlink to download the latest version:

http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp

Direct link:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...erPPCSetup.exe

2. Double click the downloaded file to install Microsoft Reader on the Pocket PC.

Note: Please install Reader in "Main Memory" or "Device Memory" instead of "Storage Card" on your Pocket PC.

Note: Please install Reader into the default folder on your Pocket PC.

Step 4: Activate Reader for Pocket PC

=======

Note: Please make sure if you do not connect to the Internet through a firewall or proxy server. It is possible that the firewall or proxy server is not allowing you to activate Reader.

1. Make sure the connection between the Pocket PC and Desktop PC is working properly via ActiveSync.

2. Visit the activation site on the Desktop PC.

<<http://das.microsoft.com/activate>>

3. Click "Sign in to start the Activation process".

4. Enter the Passport e-mail address and password, and then sign in.

5. Click the "Activate My Pocket PC" and follow the screen tips to activate the Pocket PC.

Note: a. Please make sure to use the same .Net Passport as the one used when downloading the e-book on your desktop PC.

b. Make sure that you receive the following message that confirms that the activation is successful.

"Activation components have been successfully downloaded to your device and installed."

6. Simply restart (soft reset) the Pocket PC.

I fixed my reader problems by moving to uBook....yea i know its not a solution but you would think that being a native MS application they could at least make it a little more functional.

After three attempts,I was eventually able to put the MSreader program on the SD card. There are enough patches that come along with the download. The program established its own icon on the programs menu. However, pressing this gives "Cannot find "msreader.exe"(or one of its componnents) Make sure the path and filename are correct and all the required libries are available)."--- So I go straight to the SD card file. I still haven't been able to activate shop feature, but have been reading some of the freebies from the Virginia University Library.
They certainly don't make this user-friendly.

You can get a working icon in the Start Menu by going to the MSreader.exe in your SD card and pressing copy on it, go to Windows/Start Menu and "paste shortcut". Rename as appropriate and delete the original non working icon in the same folder.......and you're golden.

This is Microsoft's way of making something free not worth what it costs. I can't get MSReader to open my legally acquired books anymore, since going from my hp2215 to the x50v. And yes I do have my activation installed. No more MSReader for me.
