Free eBook List

Wanted to start reading some eBooks on my X50v and could not find many free ones to try to see if I like it before investing.. also I did not like MS Reader so I am using another program I like more and found an easy way to convert LIT files to PRC files to keep things more organized and to stop forcing me to use another MS program.

Regardless here is a quick and dirty list where I found some books that I downloaded... no particular order or quality.. some require sign up, some don't.. just thought the list may help someone.

Great list!

I guess you and I have been down the same path looking for these websites. :)

I created a similar list at PDACorps.com, but you found a few websites that I didn't have.

Check my list as well. It also contains sites for free PPC software.

How do you convert LIT files to prc files? Can you convert them to word or text files. What is prc...as in what program opens these files?..I dont like MS reader either.

Thanks

I moved to Mobipocket Reader (Pro).. the basic reader is FREE so you can certainly use that

http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/default.asp

Their books are in .prc format, and many others I have found use the same format.

The product I found to convert LIT (MS Reader) to PRC is called ConvertLit http://www.convertlit.com/ (FREE) or the GUI interface which is much easier http://www.hot.ee/dukelupus/ also FREE

GUI Direct: http://www.hot.ee/dukelupus/ConvertLIT.htm

Very easy to use, it creates an HTML directory and then you just use MobiPocket Publisher (FREE) to create you own PRC book. Total conversion takes under 2-min complete from the time you start using the convert lit tool until the time MobiPocket Publisher creates the PRC file. Nice if you want to avoid MS Reader at all cost.

I have installed MobiPocket on my 1GB Microdrive and it works well, dumped a bunch of books in the eBooks directory on the Microdrive and it auto-picks up all of them.

Could not be easier, well I guess it could, but after all the OS is still windows based, so there has to be some work involved.

PRC files are generally associated with Palm OS. They use PRC and PDB files.

Moving eBokk from PC to Dell Axim30

Thank you very much for the links for free eBooks! I downloaded one book and now it is on the Microsoft Reader ptogram on my computer but does not show up on the Microsoft Reader list on my Pocket PC.

How do I get the eBooks onto my Pocket PC? Thanks!

Sync with desktop, click explore (on desktop activsync screen), drag & drop to sd card (or wherever you store your e-books) MS Reader should be able to find them. (I think).

I am waiting for my x50v to arrive. I am curently a registered Mobipocket Reader user - and love it. Here's a question, will they let me download a PPC version of the software? And, PRC files are what I have now - in Palm OS. Am I to understand that these PRC files (ebooks in this case) will be usable as is - within PPC? Here's another link to free ebooks. Good ones too. The links are Russian, but titles/books are in English. I use use Winrar to unzip these, then same them as .txt files in Word. Then use MakeDoc (free - just Google) to convert the .txt files to .prc. Works great.

Yes, Mobipocket comes in a PPC version, available here.

Also, the Mobipocket .prc format is cross-platform compatible. So, your ebooks from your Palm Mobipocket will be readable on your new X50v. No conversion necessary.
