Their trial period consist of reading 10 pages, which you can view by reading the instruction files. Then the trial is over. (I clicked the Forward & Back arrows until it reached 10 to see if it would quit.) I never got a chance to use it on the e-book. I've never experienced a 45-second trial period before.

Has anyone used this application? I also had problems with MS Reader and searched for an alternative application. Do we need an app that allows you to view files in the most common Windows help format(*.CHM, also known as "compiled HTML") as does the “CHM eBook Reader for Pocket PC?"

My interest in MS Reader came from reading this thread. MS READER wasn't on my X50v, either, so I tried to download it. Do I even want an eBook reader? There are a lot of free eBooks (Classics) available. Can it be also be used for reading large computer help files?

Just wondering.
I have it. It works very well with .chm files, but only .chm files. It works on VGA just fine. It's very quick and very smooth. It displays graphics well.

I use uBook now but was a reader regular until they stopped including it in rom...out of rom its just too bloated for my taste. Most manufacturers stopped installing it in their ROM back when 2003 came out...some actually as early as 2002, I think it was mainly due to DRM issues that hadnt been and still arent completely ironed out. The 2002 versions that did ship in ROM had numerous problems with DRM and ebook portability and required updates almost as large as reader itself loaded straight to main memory.

I also had some font issues once this was finished. The <&> arrows were numbers rather than symbols. If you get this problem, copy the font files with .ttf extensions from the Microsoft Reader directory into \Windows\Fonts. You can also delete the annoying help ebook from the Microsoft Reader directory if you like!
i had the exact same problem...i used activesync on my desktop to create a shortcut of the exe, then i pasted it into my start menu (windows - startmenu - programs).

as for the font, thanks for the tip! i never would have figured that out on my own! i had trouble finding it on my axim because i could not see the extension...the filename is bkdings, or something similar. it was the first file in the list. i was wondering why it said "3" for <, "4" for >, and 6 for v...oh well

thanks again! :approve:

Hi Torsten, and welcome to Aximsite. MS Reader is a free program from Microsoft for reading Ebooks (.lit format) on your pocket pc. There are lots of free books available (try http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/ebooks/ebooklist.html), and you can also purchase more current titles through sellers such as amazon.com I love reading books on my Pocket PC! It's one of the main uses for my Axim.

well,
i bought the axim x50v as a replacement for my aging axim x5
and i have to say

i was suferring with the scanlines and low res.

the x50v has a gorgeous screen, solid color with no scan lines.

however the x50v has alot of compatablity issues, that make it crash alot, or run slow.
the smart processor management isn't so smart either,
and alot of times, the 624 mhz processor feels like a slug thanks to crappy 2003 operating system.
geeze.

but for reading an ebook - oh my god what a difference, maybe a factor of 10 on a scale of 1 to 10, really a huge huge difference.

my 2 cents

I'm glad it wasn't included...

I am really glad that it was taken out of the ROM. I always use a third party reader, and it always seemed a little bothersome to have something else already loaded.

Microsoft can't ever seem to win this battle. they get in legal trouble if they include too much in the OS, and people get mad is they don't include it!

My personal preference, though, is to not include it. I'm happy to choose my own reader.

Best of luck!

MS Reader can be installed into BUILT-IN memory.
See mulras #7 post above,
and again in eve6grl02 #18

It took a while for me to understand this information. It didn’t sink in until I got the second email. It worked. And, it isn’t using up space in the main memory.

Were you able to activate the PPC? at the Microsoft download web site? I got the “OLD PPC Operating System; must be PPC 2002 and above.” when I tried. But the program works great. It does seem to hang up getting it started, but then it starts working correctly.

Thanks again for the replies.
