microsoft reader

ok, bought the axim x50v
and a dell gps bluetooth

a couple of things maybe people know.

so far the x50 has much better type..
the problem.. microsoft reader (what i was using to read the .lit files)
WAS NOT INCLUDED!!!!
---------

on my x5 400mhz it was defacto a part of the operating system.
how can they ship it without such a much needed peice of software.

actually, i'm still shocked by how crappy all the defualt pocketpc software is thats included.. i mean these things are expensive, please include some stuff with the ppc really.

anyone got a list of sites to get some acutally useful pocket pc software?
thats free?

what i need though is to get the microsoft reader.
is there a way to install it from someplace?

or something that will read .lit files and let me read it like the microsoft reader(it remebers what you read i like that)

ok, ya thanks,
i went to microsoft after i wrote this, and found a bucnh of things not included with the axim

reader is updated by the way, now includes fonts, and some updates to the reader itself.

still wonder why it was not included with the axim x50v?

anyone know of a better reader?

Does reader have to be installed in main memory? It won't work for me if installed in built-in storage.

Peterpro, what else did you find to install at MS that wasn't included?

Please excuse this question, but what do you use the MS Reader for? Actually, I have not heart about it. This may be due to the fact that I just joind the PPC community last October.

Thanks
Torsten

I had problems installing MS reader into the built in storage, but it works now. :approve:

You need to install into built in memory as normal, then edit the shortcut in the \windows\start menu directory (I use Resco file explorer for this) and re-point it to the exe located within built in storage.

I also had some font issues once this was finished. The <&> arrows were numbers rather than symbols. If you get this problem, copy the font files with .ttf extensions from the Microsoft Reader directory into \Windows\Fonts. You can also delete the annoying help ebook from the Microsoft Reader directory if you like!

schlinki - MS Reader is a free Microsoft add on for reading eBooks created with the .lit extension. Microsoft also provide a free add-in to MS Word so you can make your own eBooks from text documents.

Simon.

I didnt have this come with the x50v either.

But from my experience using the current version it seems very buggy. Couldn't get the Encarta e-book to work correctly, mostly it freezes the system or the clickable sections are way off - as in you click a top section and it select another link!

Perhaps this is why Dell didnt include the reader by default.

I have installed Msreader about 4 times now, when I try to open it i get , cannot find 'MSREADER' (or one of its components). also when i try to activate it says, you are using an older mobile pc that does not support activation. i'm using my X50v, typical Microsoft crap.

If you install to anything other than the default location, you get this error on activation. Let it install to the default location, get it activated, then you can move the .exe and .ttf files to wherever you want. You will have to re-point any shortcuts to MSReader to the new location.

That explains it ! I ended up getting Mobipocket Reader because I couldn't get MS Reader activated. No regret, though

schlinki,
MS Reader is a ebook reader software that reads .lit format ebooks. There are a PC/Tablet PC version and a PPC version. MS Reader used to be included in the ROM so most people who owned previous PPC know it. It is free and can be downloaded from MS Reader's site.

Has anyone tried “CHM eBook Reader for Pocket PC?”

http://pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14751

Their trial period consist of reading 10 pages, which you can view by reading the instruction files. Then the trial is over. (I clicked the Forward & Back arrows until it reached 10 to see if it would quit.) I never got a chance to use it on the e-book. I've never experienced a 45-second trial period before.

Has anyone used this application? I also had problems with MS Reader and searched for an alternative application. Do we need an app that allows you to view files in the most common Windows help format(*.CHM, also known as "compiled HTML") as does the “CHM eBook Reader for Pocket PC?"

My interest in MS Reader came from reading this thread. MS READER wasn't on my X50v, either, so I tried to download it. Do I even want an eBook reader? There are a lot of free eBooks (Classics) available. Can it be also be used for reading large computer help files?

Just wondering.

doorkeeper, MR can be sped up significantly with the Tweaks2k2 Brute Force VGA trick (also known as the HI_DPI fix). The display is only slightly larger, but it gets much quicker without the double pixelling.

FBL, the easiest way is to find the broken .lnk file, delete it and then create a new one through Activesync/Explore by the Copy/Paste Shortcut mechanism.
