newby e-book question

If I want to read e-books, do I have to have a reader? I don't know where to begin. Can anyone guide me what to do to get started?

Yes, you need a good reader.
Try Mobipocket, U-book, or microsoft's reader. There are free versions of all of these, but the latest version of u-book costs $12. I'll look up some links and get back to you.

Here they are!

You should already have microsoft reader, it comes with your pda.
I like mobipocket, however I'm trying out the free version of u-book now and I like it a lot so far. The latest version of u-book works in VGA (I think), but I don't have an X50 so I don't need that. You can check that version out at their website. Just do a google search and you'll find it easily.
I hope this helps. :)

I must be doing something wrong. I copied it to the Axim, but it won't open. I'm getting "Not a valid Pocket PC application."

Does it have to be a CAB file? Do I need to do somethin in order to open exe files?

You need to first install MS Reader PC on your desktop. Activate that.

Then install MS Reader for pocket pc to your Axim and activate that.

It seems complicated. But MS Reader is a decent ebook reader and it is free. There are also many free .lit ebooks available. So it might be worth it to go through the trouble.

BTW, I tried to install Reader to my Built in Storage and SD card but then had problem activiating it. I was told you need to initially install Reader to RAM in order to activiate. Then you could move the executable to elsewhere. By that time I had purchased Mobipocket Creator. I don't need MS Reader anymore so I didn't try that approach. Just so you know in case you run into problem.

BTW, ebook readers are format-specific. MS Reader opens .lit ebooks and nothing else. ebook Reader (used to be Palm Reader) reads only its format. So choose your format(s) before choosing a reader.

I think the problem is that I have a Mac and I can't activate the file on the Mac.

Mobipocket and ubook are also free (ubook at the link I gave you earlier). I think you'll have better luck with those. Ubook will handle a lot of different types of files and mobipocket is prc(?) I think. Like palm uses. There are lots of free e-books for these readers also. Do a search in these forums and you'll find some great sites. One of my favorites is fictionwise. And mobipocket has their own e-book shop. Look around and you'll find some freebies.
Try baen books also if you like science fiction. They have an excellent free library. :approve:

I wouldn't use MSreader. It is very slow, and doesn't have the features that other readers have.

Try uBook, Mobipocket or iSilo.

Microsoft reader not *all* bad

I really like my Microsoft Reader since I can purchase ebooks off Amazon and read them on my PDA. Adobe doesn't support DRM protected books on the PDA (at last check).

MSPress books and other things come in .CHM files (compliled html). To read these I have been using Fast CHM reader.

Finally, I have enjoyed the reference materials from Town Compass, LLC. They have their own reader (free) that reads their format. They have a lot of free goodies and materials to purchase. PocketDictionary
