I instalaled Mobipocket and it seems quite good. Can I download books from other sources as well, or do I have to stick only with the ones that Mobipocket offers? If I can download from other sites, what are some recommendations with good reading lists?

Yes you can. The format is prc. You can also get the mobipocket publisher and use it (on your desktop) to convert html files (or books) to prc. There is another desktop program I use to convert .lit books to html (the ones that aren't locked), called convertlit.
Some good sites are baen books, fictionwise, manybooks, just do a google search and you'll find some.

There is a page in the Mobipocket website, with the list of partners (publishers, retailers) involved in providing eBooks in Mobipocket format.
