I have been using MS Reader for a while now on the x50v, using the four activation files that were done for my old Ipaq. I bought a new book and it wants a fresh activation, so I went to the microsoft/reader/activation site, logged in, and hit the "activate pocket pc" button. That resulted in an "Activation Error" - "You have an older version of Pocket PC which does not support Activation. Activation requires Pocket PC 2002 or later." The Dell Chat guy was worse than useless with a lack of knowledge and bad advice, but the lady on the phone at least asked for a hard reset and reload of Reader (even she wasn't bright enough to remind me to do a backup before the hard reset - which I'd already done). New Reader, raw (reset) x50v, same error from MS.
Any idea why the newest PPC on the market gives that error?? Any solutions? Anybody have four new activation files (secrep.*) that they would email me??
the secrep.* files are unique to each individual, so no one should send you theirs. However, the problem is reported to be caused by having Reader installed somewhere other than main memory. Is that the case with you? If so, try installing it to main memory, activate it and then move it to wherever you want, keeping the secrep.* files with you.

where is MS Reader installed? you will get this message if it is on an SD card or BIS. re-install it in main memory, then re-locate the folder after activation. that should do it (it will also fix the font problem, if you are having it...) :approve:

I love this site!!!
That fixed it. I uninstalled MS Reader, installed it to the main memory, then Activation went through perfectly. I've copied the four files to the PC for backup.

Ahh ... I can always find out what I need to on this site. Thanks - I was having the same problem. Installing it in Main took care of it. Since I've got everything else on the SD Card I've got plenty of Main anyway.
BTW - Microsoft's site says that MSReader is supposed to have come pre-installed (in ROM) on PPC2002 and Mobile 2003. I noticed that it did not come on my X50-Mid. Did Dell just decide to exclude it for a particular reason? Surely not for lack of ROM space.
I was having the same problem as mramay. I removed Reader and tried to reinstall it, but I can't get it to install into any other location other than Built in memory. I've tried choosing the default installation folder & manually choosing Main Memory. Every time it seems to be doing it the way I want, but when it's installing on the device, it's putting the files in BIM. I even tried removing reader from my computer and reinstalling there without success. Any ideas? Thanks!

Just click yes when it install's to default location:approve: then as the others pointed out activate and then move:approve:

I tried clicking yes and letting it install to the default location, etc., however as it installs on the device it put Reader in the last place it was installed in. For example, I installed it to BIM. Then I uninstalled it. I tried to reinstall to Main Memory. On my computer it looked as if it did what I wanted. On the device screen, it showed Reader being installed to BIM. I then checked via file manager, and sure enough, it was in BIM. I then uninstalled and tried to install to SD card. No problems there. I then uninstalled and again tried to install to Main Memory. On my computer, no problem. On the x50v, it installed to SD card again. It does not matter if I check the box to install to default location or not. It always installs to the previous location, either BIM or SD card. I even took the SD card out and it STILL installs there.
See the problem? How can I get it to go to Main Memory?
If I install it to BIM or SD, can I then move it to Main Memory? What directory would I put it in if I did? Maybe then I'll be able to uninstall and reinstall properly.
