Thanks for the headsup - I installed successfully.

I don't see why not. If it runs OK from BIS it should do so too from an SD card.

But I suggest that you do what I did :-

1. Remove previous version 2.3 using Remove Programs.
2. Install v 2.4 to Main Memory (in fact to the Windows folder) by selecting Yes when asked whether to install to default location.
3. Activate 2.4
4. Move it to your SD card using Resco Explorer 2003 cut and paste.
5. Move the two small files mentioned in my earlier post as well.

I installed it to the BIS root directory. I did not create a separate folder for it.

I just wish they would create a VGA version. I would love to be able to decrease my text size.

Well, I guess it is a good thing I finished my 6000 page book last night. :)

Has anyone actually checked their version numbers? The setup EULA still says it's version 2.3, and when I check Reader it also says 2.3

Mine says 2.4. I installed when tadw announced.

OT: @tadw-Who are you on that other board?

I also transferred the two small files msreader-exe-manifest.sig (804 bytes) and msreader-exe.sig (244 bytes) to BIS. MS Reader remains Activated and runs perfectly.

I have also noticed another peculiarity. When 2.4 was in Windows, the back and forward arrows beside the page numbers were represented by the numerals 3 and 4 respectively (very peculiar, v 2.3 did exactly the same). But on transferring it to BIS the arrows sumbols are now correctly represented. :approve:
It worked from BIS. Thanks. My problem is that lit files are no longer be represented with msreader icon in file explorer or resco explorer. I can't see lit files with their msreader icons anymore. Tried to associate the file type in resco explorer again but still no luck. Any Clues?

I didn't delete my activation from the previous version. That must be the trick.

I never liked MS Reader much. I hate that it must be in main memory. I use mobibook. It is great. I also use Tiny Reader which, btw, can read MS Books

Great news: MSReader no longer has to be installed in main memory!

I just got my July 2005 copy of Pocket PC Magazine and Diane Dumas had a tip on how to install and use the newest version of MSReader from BIS or an SD card. I tried it and it works. :approve:

(I don't think her article is online yet, but the hardcopy has it on page 44, in an article entitled Diane's Discoveries.)

How? Simply install in BIS or on your storage card. Then, using AS explorer, open your MSReader folder and move the font files [.TTF] to your Windows\Fonts folder. Then, create a shortcut of the reader .exe and name it "MsReader" and move it to your Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder.

Soft reset, and it should work.

AND, a way to avoid installing those font files in your main memory? Use the freeware Fontonstorage (http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=726)app, and have it load automatically after a soft reset by placing the tiny .exe file in your Windows\Startup folder. I did, and put the reader fonts in my Fonts folder on my SD card, and MSReader worked great!

Great find by Diane, and it works great on my X50v.

Good luck!!! :) :approve:

NOTE: here's a good thread on fontonstorage if you're interested: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...=Fontonstorage

Diane's tip will get Reader running but it will not activate this way and you will be unable to open eBooks by tapping on them.

A more thorough way is to install Reader to main memory and then activate it.
Then backup your activation files with the method found here:
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/newsl_ceu/ce_update_219.htm

Then uninstall Reader, reinstall it to your Storage memory and restore your activation files. The only font you'll need to copy to Windows is the bkdings.ttf font.

Then you can recreate a proper shortcut to the relocated .EXE and you'll also need to edit your registry to re-associate .LIT files with the relocated .EXE if you're going to want double-tap activation.

From that point you'll have a Reader that's fully functioning.

gjw-

Good points. I realized the activation issue after I posted. Fortunately, I had previously saved the necessary files from a prior main-memory install activation.

Question, though? What do you mean by not being able to open eBooks by tapping them? Do you mean outside of the reader, like with Resco explorer or similar file manager?

Exactly.
In the registry, .LIT files will still be associated with the Reader in the Windows folder.
You can edit the registry or create a new association pointing to the Reader in BIS.

See my earlier post No. 13. If you use Resco Explorer 2003 to move MS Reader from Main Memory (Windows Folder)to BIS using cut and paste, there is no need to edit the Registry. Resco seems to change the necessary Registry entry.

I'm having reactivating problems with books I could open in the previous version of MSReader. Microsoft's site specifically said to delete the previous verion of MSReader before downloading the new one. Do you think that is where I went wrong?

It may be that they are secure. I worked with installing or moving to different locations, and it worked fine as long as the e-books weren't secure. If they were secure, I would get an error.
