I currently use Roadlingua French which often has words that the free MS dictionary hasn't, but it doesn't pop up from within the reader. I have Ultralingua Gold German which is a much better layout and am thinking of getting French in that too, however it is supposed to pop up from within other apps but I can't get it to. I am also having some trouble getting it to work at all after transferring it to my new Axim and have been waiting a few days for tech support. You could try it and see if it works, it has a nice look.

Roadlingua, SlovoEd and Ultralingua make English-French dictionaries. (The names are very confusing and I think there is a connection between SlovoEd and Ultralingua.) Perhaps they don't have them on the trial version.
