I'll not confess to downloading a copy of HP6, much less HP1-5 or any other popular fantasy series, but if I had I wouldn't have done it because I didn't already own the book. If I had copies it would be because I wanted to be able to read them any time or any place without having to carry around the dead-tree version. It's a matter of convenience.
Yep, if you set your google search right its their in the first page of results, I said in another thread that the easiest incentive to help reduce copyright theft and increase ebook sales would be to issue a use once discount coupon to purchasers of the real book to enable them to buy the ebook at a discount compared to regular price for the ebook. This book like every other new book is created digitally, proofed digitally and could very easily be built into an ebook. This isn't rocket science, MS have a converter thats free for Word, it probably boils down to the fact that there is too little profit in an ebook.
While not on the same level as J. K. Rowlng. Some Authors at Baen.Com have released cds with multiple format ebooks of the story and related work with some of their hardcover releases.
The problem would be breach of copyright. Thankfully, there are some companies that allow you to use 2 copies of things, like software...Office, for example, gives you legal rights to use it on both your home computer and your laptop. But even music legally can't be used in two forms at the same time. For example...if you have your CDs in mp3 format, you legally shouldn't have them on your computer and on another device--even if you own the actual CD. And if you play the CD (i.e. it doesn't serve as solely an archive), then you're also breaking the law with an mp3 recording on your computer.
.
Wow - I didn't know this. I suppose you are talking about US law (not the European flavour some of us live under). This seems bizarre, must make almost all users of digital music law-breakers. I buy CDs, rip them to my computer, sync them with my Axim, play the CD at home, MP3 at work, Axim on the move, so 3 versions in use = illegal?!! ... Plus, I archive all my digital music onto DVDs for safekeeping, so that makes 4.

Cory Doctorow discusses the Harry Potter e-book farce on boing-boing. Rowling argues that she doesn't want the books in ebook format because of piracy - but the piracy has already happened - the question is - does she want to allow people who like ebooks to be able to source them legally?
just download it...u own it anyway...so u're still gonna be an honest man...
Can I see the Mona Lisa in the Louvre for free because I have it on a T-Shirt?

Thats a fair point...and a very nice comparison.
Do many people OCR their own books though?

I know it’s not good to make comparisons, but Neil Gaiman is publishing its next book (Anansi Boys) in Audio Version, MP3 Version (2 CDs) and probably, just like its other works, in ebook format.
