Can you open lit files directly?

Is it possible to open lit files directly, rather than from within MS Reader?

I'd like to create a link on my Today screen to a couple of books I use a lot (EN-FR dictionary, for example), but clicking on the icon, or clicking on the lit file within File Manager, does not open the doc within MS Reader, but gives me an error message: 'cannot find 'docname' or one of its components'.

Is this a bug, or is the only way to open lit files to first open MS Reader? Is it possible to associate lit files with MS Reader?

Thanks!

LIT files should be associated with Reader but if you install Reader to anywhere other than Main Memory the asociations will be incorrect.
If you have access to a registry editor you can fix them yourself.
Resco File Explorer can also fix the association but it does a sloppy job.
It leaves the LIT file icon as the generic non-associated one.

Ah! That's it - I've installed it in BIS, not main memory. I have a reg editor (PHM), but to be honest I have no idea how to use it. Do I need to change the associations in each LIT file?

In your registry editor go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and then scroll down to the .ebo extension.
Make sure it is assigned to "eBookebo".
Next scoll down to the .lit extension and make sure it is assigned to "eBook".

Keep scrolling and find the entry for "eBook".
Expand it so you can see the "DefaultIcon" and the "Shell" entries.
"Shell" must be again expanded to show "Open" and "Command".

Correct both the "DefaultIcon" and the "Command" entries to point to your actual location of MSReader.
On mine the DefaultIcon entry is:
\Built-in Storage\Microsoft Reader\msreader.exe,0

and for Command it's:
"\Built-in Storage\Microsoft Reader\msreader.exe" %1

Scroll down to the "eBookebo" entry and repeat these same corrections for that one.

That should do it.

Thanks very much for this help! I've followed your instructions, and the icons are now MS Reader icons, but the books still won't open! Still cannot find the doc or one of its components... I'll check the values again to make sure I've not made a mistake

Double-check the quotation marks in the Command line.

That was it! Now it opens MS Reader automatically when I click on a LIT file, thanks!
It still doesn't open the document itself though - unlike with MS Word / other apps - is that normal?... I notice that other apps have not only an 'Open' Command in the registry, but an 'OpenDoc' command, which MS Reader doesn't have... is that why?
sorry for all the questions!

It should open Reader and load the document's Cover and Title page.
Any more than that I haven't figured out yet.
Maybe somebody else has the magic formula....
