MS Reader 2.4 - Activation is not working.

Folks,

I have an AXIM x5 with Pocket PC 2002. MS Reader was never activated on this device. When I try to activate the product I get a blank screen in the IE window.
(when try to browse to: http://das.microsoft.com/activate, the browser redirect to: http://das.microsoft.com/reader/ with a blank page)
I have no problem surfing the net with my PDA. I updated to MS reader v 2.4 today but I still have the same problem. Cleared cache and cookies > same stuff.

Any advice?

I believe you have to do it from a PC now.

Bobby's right. The instructions indicate that you need to connect your device to your PC via ActiveSync, and go to the activation page (http://www.microsoft.com/reader/info/activation.asp) on your desktop to activate it.

BTW, welcome to ActiveSync.

I can only activate it if I install to the Main Memory. If I install anywhere else, activation fails.

From your post it is unclear as to whether you are attempting to activate directly from your device. If this is so please try it from the desktop. If you are currently attempting this from the desktop please try the following:

Open Internet Explorer
Go to Tools | Internet Options
Click on the Security tab
Click on the button "Custom Level"
Go to the section marked "ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins"
For each entry in this section either mark it as "prompt" or "enable"
Close your browser window
Open a new browser window and navigate to
http://das.microsoft.com/activate/en-us/activate.asp?
Attempt to go through the activation process

If your issue persists please respond back and I will do my
best to help you resolve this issue.

mines on SD.. activated fine from PC.

Well I am having the same problem. I get the reader on the SD card but when I try to activate it states "You have an older version of Pocket PC which does not support Activation. Activation requires Pocket PC 2002 or later."
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am trying to activate from PC with PPC on active sync.

Try this..

1. install reader to main memory.
2. activate it from desktop.
3. uninstall reader from main memory.
4. re-install reader in your SD.
5. Fix shortcut.

.. its worth it to move reader to SD since it takes about 2MB of your precious RAM.

I give up!! I have downloaded the MS Reader to main memory, BIS and stoarage card and each time I try to activate it gives me the same line as I posted earlier I guess I'll just keep reading hardcovers!!!!??#?%?

I couldn't get it to install to SD card either. I have tried uninstalling, cleaning out the dead stuff with Memmaid, soft-resetting, then reinstalling into main memory and the blankedy-blank thing keeps installing to SD card. And of course, it won't activate from there! Argh!

hmm.. if you guys are having problems then look under you PC>activesync folder>MS Reader and find "msreader_arm.cab". move this file to your PPC and install it with cabinstl to your desired folder. :)

donno why you guys are having such problems.. did you follow the 5 step instructions that I posted? I'm WM2003 SE A05.. MS Reader is installed to SD and fully activated.

All:

There are a few key things to know about the Reader and activation in order to make installation to your sd card successful.

If you install to the SD card and want to uninstall so that you can install to main memory you need to make sure that when you uninstall you click on the "Remove" button in the "Remove all" section of the add/remove programs window to uninstall. This will remove the setup location cached for that program (it does not impact your windows installation of the Reader). Once you have done this you should be able to install to where ever you like.

The preferred method of activating the Reader is to install to main memory, activating and then if you do not want the Reader in main memory you can uninstall (with remove button) and re-install to SD card. Your activation should still remain intact.

Should you not want to pursue the hassle of installing and uninstalling there is a work around. You can copy the file udhid.dll (hidden file) to the windows directory of your device. This file can be moved via activesync explorer as long as you have "show hidden files" enabled for your file explorer. Once you have done this soft boot your device. Now when you attempt to activate it should "just work". One thing to note is that you should not attempt to try and run the Reader or activation before doing the soft boot as neither will run successfully.

The other issues regarding SD card installs are fairly well documented: Copy your fonts to your windows or Fonts directory on the PPC and Rename the old Reader shortcut and create a new one pointing to the exe on your storage card.

Once you have that accomplished you should be good to go.
