PocketCultMAME 0.4

PocketCultMAME 0.4a is ready for download from www.pocketcult.com. I added the option 'Intel 2700G double pixel size' for Axim x50v/x51v users, read the documentation included about this feature.

UPDATE: Problem below fixed from a kind soul on a another thread. On the X30, if you mess with the direction controls it makes the up and down not work. When you run PCMAME, you can change the action buttons, but, leave the direction controls alone. They are already mapped and work fine without messing with them. PCMAME rocks!

I am very impressed with the speed of the .4 release. Two questions, please:

1) I can map the movement to the Axim X30, though only left and right works. Up and down do not. I was amazed that MERCS is correct speed with full sound, though I could not advance in the game (only moves left and right). The weird thing is it accepts the changes in options, it just does not go up and down in any games. Same for all tried.

2) Any chance for a throttle option? Some games run too fast.

Excellent! The compatability is loads better with these new builds, and the speed on my Loox is great.

Couple of issues I'm not sure if others have:

* If I turn on "show FPS" most of the games crash my PDA
* If I try to rotate the screen with scaling on most games quit the emulator

What ROMS has anyone got working with this? So far I've got Time Pilot, Time Pilot 84, 10 Yard Fight, Zaxxon and Super Space Invaders working. Super Space Invaders has a few graphical glitches on the menu screens making the High Score table unuseable for me, but the gameplay's fine. Time Pilot 84 was my favourite ever pub game, so I'm well happy as it plays perfectly. Thanks for your work with this mcastrillo, great job!

Well ive tried 2 games. Metal Slug and 1942. Neither get to far. 1942 loads the first screen flickers a bit then locks up..
Metal Slug just gives me the cannot load roms error. It bairly begins to load it seams. Im wondering if this is a memory issue.

I do hope this can be fixed and optomized. I would love to play metal slug on my x50v

You might want to note that (for old arcade games at least) there are often several versions of the rom of a game: version 1, 2, bootleg etc. So far, my personal results tend to show a better compatibility with the "bootleg" roms.
For example, I found some versions of 1942 weren't working before getting another that was (named "1942 set 1").

Note to anyone having trouble getting your ROMS to work:

If you have a large set of roms, make sure the set is MERGED, not SPLIT. In a split romset, many rom files depend on other roms for certain files, so if you take it out of the collection, it will stop working. You can change this using a ROM manager like CLRMame or ROMcenter.

EDIT - Sorry, that's not right. The Romset should either be "Split/Not Merged" or "Not Split" according to this page. I hope I've got it right this time.

Well, its a bit complicated, and maybe I'm not the best one to give advice since I seem to be having my own problems converting my ROMS to .34 format . Just when I think I'm starting to grok MAME romsets, something else comes along to confound me!

But this page looks like it has enough info to get you on the right track. Hope it helps.

Okay, I'm finally getting most games to run in pocketcultmame. If you're having problems with the emulator saying "unable to open roms/ error reading rom/ LOAD FAILED!!!", this is how I solved the problem:

Download Romcenter and run it. Set the rompath to wherever you keep your ROMS (you may want to back them up first, this will alter them!). Add pcmame.dat (should be included with pocketcultmame) using the datafile manager, and then select it in the drop-down menu in the main interface. Go into preferences and set the rom structure to "un-merged (all ROMS in both sets)". Then select your rompath from the left-hand pane and select all your ROMS. Then select "Fix game" under the "Roms" menu.

When Romcenter is done, any games that show up with a green icon should have no missing files and be in .34 format. In other words, pocketcultmame should be able to load them (whether it can run them is a different story). Any games that have yellow or red icons at this point are probably beyond hope.

At least, that's the way it should work. In reality, I have some games that show up green in Romcenter and pocketcultmame still complains that they are missing files, but almost all of them work, and that's good enough for me! Hope this helps some people.
