Sony Playstation Emulator with VGA & Hardware 3D acceleration (2700G!) Support Out!!!
Ever wanted to play Sony Playstation games on your Pocket PC? Ever heard of FPSEce, the only, high-quality and last but not least, FREE PlayStation emulator for the Pocket PC? I have some great news for you: after a LONG waiting, the new version is out - now, with (in Portrait mode only) VGA & some 2700G (Linear Frame Buffering to decrease the CPU load) support! It’s just wonderful!!

The God of all Pocket PC Emulators, author of the PocketGamer.org / PocketGaming.de Emulator Page, Michu, has promised some days ago he would come up with a present for the Pocket PC community. The present turned out to be a MAJOR one: a brand new, heavily updated FPSEce version!

The first screenshots of the new versions were published back in October. These screenshots are REALLY worth checking out: they demonstrate very well how the previous, QVGA-only and current, VGA & 2700G-enabled versions compare. The difference is outstanding!

Note that the official download page of the FPSEce folks still doesn’t contain information on the new release, it’s so new. Therefore, you’ll want to download the new emulator from either the related English language thread on pdai.org of the official forum or from great German all-in-one handheld gaming site PocketGaming.de (direct link to download).

Also see this article for more information and a LOT of brand new screenshots (I've linked one of them above). The article is in German; the English Babelfish “translation” is here. A shorter, English article of the new version can be found, as has already been pointed out, here. I also recommend this AximSite thread.

How well do the x50v controls work for this emulator?

Also, approximately what kind of performance should we expect to see?

This sounds like a great amazing achievement for the handheld world!

x50v is, as far as I can tell, the best device for it, it rocks compared (FPS) to others when useing LFB driver.
And controls are ok for me ^^ but it depends on the game, too... on the other hand, with 12 Onscreen Buttons, you can do the job even without most oft the Hardware Keys of your Axim just by using the Directional Pad.

stupid questions please forgive
I've read the "read me" that comes with the emulator and still don't understand how I'm supposed to load my ROMs. My Roms are compressed in RAR format.

What is an ISO? Aren't play station games to big to play on the axim x51v? I can't even free enough rom on my x51v to play the 32mb GBA games?

Any help with my understanding of loading games would be appreciated. Why a bios folder and an ISO folder?

Thanks again!

I'd have to say to play anything other than a demo cd (which could be quite small) you'll need at least a 1GB flash memory card to store the emulator and games.

The ROM image is not the same as a game ROM image from another console, it is the operating system of the console which is needed in order to be able to play the games that are stored on cd.

You need to use a program like Nero or some other software capable of copying CDs to your hard drive prior to putting the game image in your "iso" directory. You'll also need to decompress the Rom image from the Rar archive (which will give you a ".bin" image) and put the file in the "bios" directory.

You BOTH seem to mix up ROM with RAM and ROM with ISO and stuff.

It's not that hard if you just think for a few min.

PSX games come on CD --> how can you but a CD in your PDA? You can't, so you have to copy the CD's content into a file --> make an ISO image

--> CD's are big --> how to make the image file smaller? --> rip content out of the file e.g. eleminate Music and/or Video and/or compress the file.

This makes the image of the CD sometimes 95% smaller then the original and it fit's on your storage card or internal storage (I have several games that are under 100 MB even some under 20 MB when they are compressed).

About the BIOS, it's just the same as with your PC, if you start your PC, the BIOS is loaded before everything is loaded and the same function has the PlayStation BIOS (it's also said in the Readme that you need it).
The BIOS gives the emulator the starting instructions and coordinates, so you need it and since it's copyright protected by Sony, sharing it as a file is illegal as it is illegal to copy commercial CD's and share them.

Hope you understand now that you need both, games' CD ISO image file (ripped/compressed) and PlayStation BIOS file. We can not give it to you since sharing is illegal.

Thanks Michu for the clarification and the link which explains everything, I now have the bios folder and just need to work on converting my games into an iso file!
