GB/GBC emulator
Does anyone know a good GB emu which has a version both on the PPC and on Windows?

I need both apps to read the same saved states.

I am using pocketgnuboy which works very well except it doesnt seem to save the states to a file and also it doesnt work on windows.

Reason is, I am using the emu to for a GB music program. I want to compose and construct songs on the move using the PPC, and then save the state. Copy the state to the PC version so that I can record it to a wav file.

Any ideas?

Im looking something similar to PocketGBA which can read and write saves compatible with VisualBoyAdvance. Except I think this emu is for GBA only.

thanks

Please use the new Emulator Forum for such questions =)

Yep, PocketGBA is for GBA emulation only for now.

GnuBoy ports save states to a file, some do that under "\My Documents\gnuboy\" though. There is a Win32 Version of GnuBoy, check e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnuboy (pages on the bottom).
However, it's command line though

Other option I know is VGB under MorphGear (which exists for Win32, too) but it's commercial

What device do you have btw?

On the other hand, why don't you use GameBoy's normal save slots? Every emulator should be able to read those. Or do you mean that? <.<"

Hi Michu,

Sorry didn' t see that forum!

Didnt realise there was a Win32 port of gnuboy, thanks alot! So do you think it can read the snapshot save files from pocketgnuboy?

I found the files in the same folder as the rom file. I can't use the the normal save files because the rom cannot save!

Ah, I see.

As all GnuBoy ports use same style to create save states, I highly guess that they share the same method as the "mother app" indeed. But I can not say how good win32 version is.

Maybe you can find a native PPC program that can create music the way you want it, too. I somehow think using an emu for that is a bit like emulating GBC on PSX emu for PDA, so one way too much ^^ but prove me wrong there

On the other hand, you might find such a program as freeware for other systems that are emulatable, too.

So there's always one way more to skin the cat.

Just tried GNU win32 port. The sound does not come out properly so I cant really use it. Also it doesnt load snapshots anyway!

I use a x30 btw.

Just so you know, I can't record directly from the PPC because it has an annoying hiss in the background. I think this is a common problem with the X30.

Of course I can emulate it on the PC, but the program was made for the gameboy and is supposed to be portable. Something I want to replicate on a PPC.

Seems like things arent going my way!

Ok Im getting somewhere.

I managed to get the PC port of GNUboy to save and load game states.

Ok it DOES load the state from the PPC port. But it seems really buggy, the start button seems to not work after loading.

Anyway, it doesnt matter the sound doesnt work anyway.

If only I can contact the dev of the PPC port, maybe I can convince him to build a Win32 port.

Uhm, what do you mean by "hiss "?
I mean you create wave files on emu, you don't record them either, you have to find a program that does that under WinCE, too.
No hissing there if the program is good ^^

when listening to audio on the X30, you can hear a background hiss, this is nothing to do with the emu, its a fault with the hardware, it happens with every bit of audio.

If you do a search for 'hiss' on the X30 forums, you will find quite a few people have noticed this.

It would be ideal if the emu can record to WAV, except pocketgnuboy doesnt unfortunately!

Yeah but the fault of the hardware has nothing to do with either emu or a native PDA program that can do the same job as the ROM you wanna load...

So the hiss is there when you create audio with the ROM and it will be there when creating audio with a native program but as it's hardware, it will not be there if you use a program to create wave and then put the wave onto your PC...

What I meant was things like this:
http://www.freewareppc.com/multimedi...cillator.shtml

No need for recording if you can create it on your PPC anyway...

Hey cool app thanks.

Although I would still want to use the gameboy app because it is very good.

Its looking better. I actually attempted to record it direct to PC using the headphone out, if I turn the volume up the max, it will kinda hide the hiss. Also I can apply some hiss reduction using an audio editor without too much destruction to the sound. Overall, its good enough.

So I guess that kinda solves my problem.

Thanks for the help michu ;-)
