I own hundreds of legal MP3s, they are not illegal in the least, even the RIAA agrees. Downloading them from the internet from anything other than a legitimate online service, likthe Apple iTunes store or what have you, is, but ripping them from your own discs, or buying them online from a legitimate copmany is legal.
If it were illegal Apple probably wouldn't be selling so many iPods, at least, not legally
I'm not entirely sure on the legality of ROMS, I don't see why that doesn't fall under the same category as other software-- legal to copy as long as you legally own it and only use it yourself. If I can legally backup games, or burn a game onto a different kind of memory media, or something like that, and I don't distribute it, and own it, then THAT isn't illegal, unless there was some kind of separate stipulation in the contract about that.
I just don't get why this would be any different than any other software you can buy, I always though it was an individual licence that you bought... and I also always though that if you were to get sued, then the courts would interpret it that way as well.
