Actually, that's completely wrong. These are just things that sites post, mainly because the people running these illegal sites are idiots.

1. It is NOT legal to copy a game cartridge to another format (i.e. ROM file) even if you own the cartridge.

2. You are correct, however there are only a small handful of legal ROMs out there.

3. Not so....Unless the copyright holders have officially released it as freeware, you can still not download it for free. It doesn't matter how old something is, it is still copyrighted, so therefore you cannot copy it. And yes, the owners can still make money off of them.....many times a company will eventually port their old games to PC or another gaming system as a "Retro Pack" or something like that.

Anyhow, I just wanted to set that straight. And as always on Aximsite, feel free to discuss emulation/emulators.....but please do not discuss ROM trading/obtaining/etc.

Here's an actual answer to your question. From the MorphGear website.

I load a game and nothing happens, why?
It's possible the game was corrupted during your download. You may also not have enough available memory free to load the game. You need at least the size of the ROM plus about 1 MB, except for the GBA and SNES modules which could require between 4 to 8 MB additonal RAM. It could also be that the game is simply not supported by the emulator at this time. Always check the Options/Global Settings/Console tab for information.

If you want legal advice, there's law forums for that.

If you look hard enough you can find legal ROMs - most of these ROMs were never obtained from carts but written solely for use with emulators. For example browse these public domain/freeware ROMs.
There, now you can justify any emulator conversation on this board.

Other than the free ROM link above, it is against the Aximsite rules to ask for ROM links or provide links to ROMs. The only reason the above link is allowed is because all ROMs on the site are public domain.

I own hundreds of legal MP3s, they are not illegal in the least, even the RIAA agrees. I'm not entirely sure on the legality of ROMS, I don't see why that doesn't fall under the same category as other software-- legal to copy as long as you legally own it and only use it yourself. If I can legally backup games, or burn a game onto a different kind of memory media, or something like that, and I don't distribute it, and own it, then THAT isn't illegal, unless there was some kind of separate stipulation in the contract about that.

I just don't get why this would be any different than any other software you can buy, I always though it was an individual licence that you bought... and I also always though that if you were to get sued, then the courts would interpret it that way as well.

I live in Brazil... we don´t care at all about copy software of any kind... it´s illegal here, of course, but everybody does it, nobody cares about it... actually somebody could think you are idiot if you pay for software... But look, here is a poor country and we expect that rich countries help our development, because they have slaved us so much before. It´s only a kind of justice... look this, we have quotas (10% for each) for indians, blacks and poor people for high quality education in Public University... but we must do it or we will waste so much intellectual resourses only because they cant afford to pay the college... and if we are something more than a jungle today is because of this people ancestors (mine included)
