Pocketnester with 300mhz basic, possible?
Has anyone tried pocketnester with a axim basic model (300 mhz)?
If so, what are the results? Does it run pretty well? How much memory will I need to run and play the thing?
I'm stuck with a basic axim model, now kinda wishing that I had gotten the advanced.
Oh and I really don't wanna try the overclocking thing unless its safe and easy to do (I don't want to hurt my baby!)

Basic is great
I bought a Basic unit because I couldn't quite stretch my budget enough to get an Advanced. I've never been more happy with a Palm Device. I've used a Palm IIIc, Palm M130, Casio E-300 and my Axim. I've loved my Axim.

Later I purchased a 256MB CF card so I could extend my storage. And I think that is a better deal. Even if mine is a little slower, I've got more memory now than I would have had if I had just gotten the Advanced Model.

I use PocketNester often. It runs great. Every ROM I've used has worked just fine. Full Sound and Video without a glitch and I can 'Save Games' any time I want. I store the Program and ROMs on the CF Card and that does not seem to affect the performance.

I always run my unit at 300 Mhz 'Normal' Mode. I do notice a difference with 200Mhz or Powersave mode. I don't know anything about OverClocking. I'd rather not fry the thing I can't afford to replace it.

Pocket nester runs just about any NES game perfectly. Overclocking is very easy and hasn't damaged anyones ppc so far(or hasn't been reported) if you need those extra frames. But I think you'll be quite happy with the speed of your Ax.

That's odd Pepsi_blue, I have both on my Ax (and a couple other NES emus), and I prefer Nester over YameCE. They're both good emus for NES, but Nester scrolls better for the games I play with it.

Any other opinions and views with people who have experienced nester with the basic system would be helpful.

Um, NES emulation isn't that intensive, you can play games in 200MHz mode with little trouble. I play games in Nester all the time on my Basic.

SNES emulation, on the other hand, is beyond a 400MHz (running 2002 at least) to run full speed. If you want to dabble in it, I highly recommend 'Pocket SNES Bleeding Edge'. Pocket SNES Bleeding Edge is a more optimised SNES emulator, I can get 'playable slowness' on my Basic locked in 300MHz mode (it does not like the processor set to 'Auto'). I play Gradius 3 on it from time to time.

Anyone have a link for YAMce? Internet search shows nothing.

I had a Basic model that ran Nester great. A couple games, such as Punch Out, wouldn't work very well, but most did. I then got the Advance unit and have yet to have a ROM not work. I also tried YAMce, and for some reason it didn't work as well as Nester for me. I guess it is all about personal preferences.

I have an X5 Basic and was a longtime fan of Pocket Nester. Today I installed Yame CE and I am absolutely stunned. Super Mario 1 is soooooooooo much smoother on Yame than Nester. I havent played with it much, but I think that it will become my primary NES emulator. I have both installed, just in case

submitted by me. Hehe.I found the ONLY american working link on a site, so i thought ide share it.

But i dont like how pocket nester freezes or slows down sometimes, but i guess that will be fixed in the next version.
I like yamece because it does more than one emulator.
Pepsi-blue was a little harsh, pocket nester is easy and ok to use.

As tom said you can play nes at almost any speed, so no matter what axim you have you will come out with great results.

Ok, I always used Pocket Nester on my Axim Basic, and found it good without sound (30fps+) but with sound at lowest quality, I only got 20fps max. So today I tried Yame ce and it is much better, not sure why, but it does do video+sound much better than Nester on a basic axim.

Overclocking it to 400 mhz is very easy and from years of PC overclocking experience it should be (overclocking is never 100%, but what is) very safe. The 300 and 400 mhz chips ARE the same so bumping your basic up to advanced speeds should be as safe as someone running an advanced Axim. They may bin the chips, but I doubt it. Peoples CPUs don't seem to be limited until well over 400 mhz. So, you may get crashers if the overclocking softare isn't working right or if you overclock the CPU too high, but if you stay at 400 mhz I'd bet that you are 99.9% safe.

I of course will be pushing for 1 ghz with pocket phase change cooling J/k. Maybe I can rig one of those little hard liquer bottles, a GPU fan and some tiny tubing for a pocket water cooling setup
