Mame on Axim
I have just bought an Axim X5 with 2003 (v4.20.1081). What's the best mame Emu for it. I have tried several and they either don't work on the hardware?

See the little "Search" button on the top right of the main page ? Use it

There are at least 3-4 threads on MAME per week, and I personally have contributed to every single one of them for the past two months.

And how exactly have you "tried several and they either don't work on the hardware?" ? The MAMECE and the MegaMAME work like a charm for every single user on this forum.....http://www.mameworld.net/mamece3/

Nice shooting Tex! Just followed your advice. Did search on Mame. First posting I look at has this content "Well, it doesn't work at all on my Axim, but I've heard it works fine for other people... meh." So, every single person on this formum it works for. Well I stand corrected. I have tried the mame install to which you direct me prior to logging on to this forum. Does it load-yes. However, whenever I select a game and select play, the program presents a blank screen, (although the surrounding menus remain). After about a minute it simply returns to the game selection window.

Now, as far as I can discern, all you can do in regards to this issue I am experiencing is point to a product that works for you, (which I have already tried). You also gave me incorrect information in regards to the performance of Mame Emu's and the Axim unit. So, either add some value or take you wacko help elsewhere - were all full up here now. First of all, allow me to laugh at your very informative post. You had to make sure that I got what you were trying to say, so you wrote it twice

What you probably saw, was the thread about the MegaMAME, which indeed does NOT work for everyone, since it has VERY high memory requirements. So, unless you make the appropriate adjustments, it will not work. However, the plain MAMECE works for everybody.......at least everyone who has an IQ above 75, so he/she can actually follow some simple instructions

As for blank screen, the emulator has nothing to do with this. It means that the ROM file is incomplete, or unsupported, or the filenames are all wrong. Since the emulator fires up, it works. If a specific ROM doesnt work, this means that the ROM has a problem

"Take my AOL help elsewhere" ? I should be offended, but I ROFLMAO For a newbie you're quite funny, even though you didnt know how to use a single button ("Search"). Now you know........

...Go play with it

ok before anybody gets burnt from all this flaming you might want to check that this mame emulator has been fully updated for windows mobile 2003 which is what madkat has.

It doesnt say so on their site so check the thread here

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...threadid=14550

its about programs people have working on wm2003.

hope that helps.

Firstly. Oblox - thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Secondly. Burns. Didn't you not see the first reply I got from TheACE. There is sarcasm all through it and you ask what's with my attitude? I guess I should have said, "Hey, thanks for being a smart a*se and not actually helping me". I have never previously flamed anyone on any forum ever. Of course an appropriate response would have been "Have used the sites search engine? There are several threads that already cover issues with mame. If it's not one of those issues can you provide more details of what you have done" I'm worried about the advice I'm getting from TheACE. Firstly he says that no-one has issues with mame, only to find there are numerous issues according to the site. It was with some amusement to find that TheACE actually participated in a thread that talked about my exact issue. I also noticed that at some stage he himself has had issues with mame and the Axim. People who ask questions on forums want considered help, not attitude from self styled gurus. If you are going to give advice with sarcasm, at least it should be correct.
You may have a different opinion and I accept that.

Lastly, to my friend TheACE. Let me make this clear so you don't send anyone else up the garden path. I HAVE loaded the smaller version which you reference in your response, (several times). All I ask is that you don't make broad statements as fact when they are not true. Firstly you say that no-one has problems - not true. Then you say that the smaller version works for everybody - not true. This is not a flame - I just want you to be providing correct information. Once it's correct - be as sarcastic as you like. I don't really care then. Also, I did try about 20 games on the mame and they were all blank. I guess you are suggesting that I should have tried the whole lot. No soup for you.

Lastly,

Well, I guess I should add some intelligent comment as well.....

First of all, I would like to repeat my comment about the emulator and the ROMs: since the emulator cannot produce error messages about missing and/or invalid filenames, it simply blanks out for a sec, then returns to the main menu. This means that the ROM you are using is wrong. Plain and simple. Either a file is missing, or a filename is incorrect and/or has incorrect CRC. Simple as that. The 0.95 version uses the ROMs from before the 0.67 version, so you might want to look up ROMs in the format used back then (about 3 months ago)......

As for the help/guru/attitude issue: I dont have any (issues or illusions of grandeur ). I simply share my info and experience, so others can benefit, or use it as they see fit. The fact that I sometimes have to repeat myself 4-5 times within a week or so does get on my nerves, but I still try to explain/help once again

If you saw appropriate to "use" my help as a tool to vent some anger-built steam, thats fine. Just dont expect me to NOT return the "favor"...

Also, I had NO problem whatsoever saying that I had a problem with MegaMAME. Its a memory thing, and after some tinkering, everyone got it working. Granted, you may not be able to run all of the 1000 games or so, but I'm 100.001% sure that you can get all 60 games of MAMECE (apart from clones) to work like a charm

Try teaching HTML/Javascript to high school kids. I typically have about 160 students, so I think I probably repeat myself around 160 times a day

Well, I do have some experience teaching IT to kids (mainly highschool ones), so I got a pretty good idea of what you are talking about

Thing is, during class, there is no SEARCH function that you can send your kids to use, instead of bothering you

I hate MAME. They change what is "acceptable" for a rom every friggin build. I had some that used to run when mame was DOS based. When they switched to Windows, I tried to load the same ZIPs and it said they were incomplete. Bah. I deleted my Mame dir.

It is indeed a problem, and I think they have their reasons, but it's not so much of a problem, as an inconvenience......you simply have to make sure that you have the latest versions of the roms that have changed......

Notes:
Running MegaMameCE3 9.5
Tested on Dell Axim X3i/400 running MS Pocket PC 2003 version 4.20 and MegaMame and Roms from a 256MB SanDisk SmartCard Storage card.
I do not have any Roms, please do not ask me for them.
Some games run slow and some games work, but are very difficult to play with the Pocket PC built-in controls.
There is a know problem with Keymapping saves (Reconfigure Game Keys). If you reconfigure, MAME CE3 does not "remember" the settings automatically. It does, however store the settings. After you have created a preferred keymap the first time you run MAMECE, every time you run MAMECE again you will have to select the "Reconfigure Game Keys" option, and select "Save Changes". It's not as bad as it sounds, it's just a quick keystroke to do this.
The more ROMS you have, the longer it will take to load MegaMameCE3.
MegaMAME CE3 likes to crash (freeze and lock up) a lot. I can play for about 10-20 minutes, then I have to perform a soft reset (reboot) of my Pocket PC. Some games will completely crash my Dell Axim and force a soft reset and power off my backlight!
Pocket PC's use a 240x320 screen resolution, which is great for "upright" and verticaly oriented games.
When playing horizontal oriented games, I often get a system crash, due to an incompatible screen resolution. I may experiment with NYDITOT Virtual Display in the future.
All of these use old (required) MAME ver. 36 Roms and Sound Samples.
Sound is underdeveloped, but often working.
Even though Mame version 0.36 supports large Roms (+1 MB), it is unlikely anything that large will play properly, if at all. The largest Roms I have seen working are Arkanoid 2 (307k), Rolling Thunder (324k), and World Cup 90 (374k).
I do not know if this is a CPU, size, or resolution issue.
I am also running Mame32Plus 0.81 on P4 2.4 Gz Dell with Hanaho Hotrod SE controller & WinXP Home.
I am also running Mac Mame 0.77u2 G4/1 Gz PowerMac OSX.

Stuff To Do:
Create disabled roms folder (move on Pocket PC?)
Test with MameCE3 (not MegaMame)
