TI-99 on Pocket pc-- FINALLY!
YAY! ive figured out how to emulate the TI-99 Through DOSbox.
You will need the following:
n0p's DOSbox port (look at the guide to DOS emulation)
DOS drivers for sound blaster 2 pro
V9T9 (dos emu for TI-99-- check out 99ers.net for it)
Axim or other pocket PC (well duh!)
1. unzip DOSbox onto your PC (NOT axim right now, although it is possible)
2. open the dosbox.conf file in notepad & edit the following:
fullresolution=640x480 (only if you have a VGA screen, otherwise 320x240)
core=normal (not neccesary, but it speeds it up a bit)
[sblaster]
type=sbpro2
3. also, in the .conf file, add a mount line & a SET SOUND line in the autoexec section.
Example : mount c "\* card\dos" (* can be SD or CF)
and then add the line "SET SOUND=C:\sound"
3 1/2: Copy the whole DOSbox directory to the axim (id recommend a storage card)
4. after downloading the sound blaster drivers & V9T9, extract both of them to the DOS (not DOSbox) folder.
5. Install (through DOSbox, of course) the drivers first, then v9t9.
6. for some odd reason, the SB drivers install in the C:\ directory. place all the .drv files in C:\sound\drv.
7. Everything should work now, this is all i had to do.
now, go kick it old-school!
FAQs:
Q: Why am i installing the SB drivers?
A: V9T9 absolutely REFUSES to run without these drivers, even with sound & speech disabled.
Q: how fast does it run?
A: id guess about 60-70% of the TI-99's actual speed. Not fast enough to run fast-paced games, such as Parsec, but good enough for games like Hunt the wumpus & Tunnels of Doom.
Q: where can i get roms?
A: I cant tell you, all i can say is google it.
Q: how do i load roms?
A: look up on the 99er forums, its kinda complex, so it takes a while. also, after installing V9T9, look in * card\v9t9\docs\modules.txt
Q: does sound work?
A: the 3 main voices work excellent, however, i could not get speech to work.
If you run into any problems, please post them here.
P.S. Tweaking both the V9T9 & DOSbox .conf files will probably result in a better running app. If you run into a good configuration, try posting it as an attachment.
Random notes:
Maybe posting the Dos & DOSbox directories in the axims flash memory instead of a storage card will speed it up? dunno.
further tweaking of the Dosbox's conf file (especially the CPU section) might boost speed, or slow it down. Maybe tweaking V9T9 on Dosbox on a regular PC could give us an idea on how to approach it.
I tried to get Sound Blaster 16 drivers installed, but the driver installation program would just freeze in DOSbox, even on my PC.
ive attached a pic of my x51v running V9T9 at the infamous start-up screen, also.
