Goal - Robotron in my pocket (on the Axim x51v)

Okay. I've followed the Arcade Games Emulation Guide by Menneisyys.
I have Pocketcult mame 0.4 loaded on my x51v.
I have the controls configured as described in the article.
I have obtained and converted the Robotron blue label to 0.34.
I can start the game, but I cannot seem to get the controls to work.

Can someone help me? Do I need to use a keyboard?

I've also tried to use the Belkin snap-n-type thumbboard, but that does not seem to work, either.
