my experince hotsyncing over BT. (with screenshots!)

just thougbh i would post this, since there arent a whole lot of instructions around on how to do this.

THE SETUP
i have a toshiba m400 running vista business and a plam t2.
this is my second bt device, and so i decided to see if i could get my m4 talking to my t2, you know, just for the fun of it.

BACKGROUND INFO
there are a few things that you need to do to get this working.

make SURE that...
*both devices are discoverable. (for security reason, i had my tablet/palm indiscoverable, during the procedure to turn on bt on the palm, i unconscionably set it to be discoverable, and forgot to do the same on my tablet, resulting in a few miniuts of confusion before realizing.)

*you have hotsync installed, and the sync manager is running.

*both devices have BT enabled.

SOFTWARE SETUP @ PC
here we configure the pc to accept the palms connection offer, and to pipe it to the virtual serial port, then to the hotsync manager. sounds a lot more complex then it really is.

1. start>control panel>bluetooth local COM>
2. you will see a list of virtual COM ports here. i had around 30. my tablet doesnt have a hardware serial port, so i was able to use COM1.

3. click (or in my case tap!) "add".
4. select "create a bt virtual com port for a server", then hit next.

5. heres where things get a little dicey. you need to find a com port that isnt in use, for conveyance, choose the lowest integer possible, in my case, COM1.

6.once you have entered the COM integer, click next, then finish.
7. ok out of the bluetooth local com app.
8. right click on the hotsync manager icon, in the taskbar.

9. click setup.

10. click on the "local" tab.

11. where it says "com port" put in what ever com port you set up in step 6.
12. ok out.

PALM SETUP.
1.goto "all"
2. goto hotsync
3.click on the little tab, and select "connection setup"
4. click "new..."
5. enter the name for the connection (i use BT, bluetooth sounds too icky)
6. in "connect to" select "pc"
7. in "via" select "bluetooth"
8. in device, tap to find. you might have to type in a pin key, if you have one set.
9. ok out.

DONE.

please post questions/comments!
for anyone who is wondering, the aircraft that is set as my wall paper is a Rutan Long-EZ.
