The Axim x51v may not have enough memory to load the program. My test platform is an x50v running PPC2003. Windows Mobile 5 is a real memory hog. Try doing a soft reset, it might help.

Also, the code used to play the cinematics and decode the audio mp3s may not correctly support Windows Mobile 5 yet. Support for that is planned for the next release.

It's likely the memory issue, or something about the Dell Axim x51v specifically. I'll upgrade my x50v here and work on it.

Another WM5 device I have here works fine, but it has 128MB of memory.

<looking at specs> How the heck am I going to free up 40MB of program space on my X50v??!?!? I can't even get VGA wargus to run reliably with approx 34-35MB of RAM, and that's with everything installed to BIS...

If anyone gets it running on a lower amount of RAM than the specs suggest, please post!

Feck. I screwed up the pak converter again. I fixed it, updated the site, and now I'm going to bed. F'n tired.

If more things crop up, I'll fix them tomorrow.

You don't need 40 MB of program space. You just have to have 40MB of program space and storage space added together. I wrote code specifically to page out to storage space if you have it. Try the program out and see if it works. Regardless, you'll probably want to redownload now that I've fixed (hopefully) the pakconvert script (again).

just to be clear : do you need a current version of the game in order to play? Since the artwork is non-redistributable, can we install the demo and copy things over?

I think this is going to be a little bit of a challenge to get it working, but well worth the effort.

Yes, you do need the 1.32b patched up release version of the game to play. I've had reports of the q3a demo pakfiles working, but no guarantees on that. Either way, I can't redistribute them.

That said, i just fixed yet another pakconvert bug (doesn't seem to stop, does it...). Ensure your package has cygpcre-0.dll. If it doesn't, redownload.

I swear to god, the next release will have an installer that does all of this for you without all the stupid scripting.

OK, since this doesn't seem to be an easy task to perform, AND I get to go into work late tonight (yes, arriving at 4am to work is late).
  1. First things first... since this is still in development, I recommend you backup your device.
  2. Close everything you have running on your PPC down. This includes Today plug-ins, and Wisbar, or any other kind of closer program - they all take up memory you NEED.
  3. The things we are going to have to download. All of my links are for either fileshack, cygwin, or noctemware. If you don't have an account for fileshack I recommend you set one up.
  4. Now that we have the required files, we can start installing/extracting them. I recommend you create a folder called quake3, replace the X with your drive letter.
    • Install the demo to X:/quake3/demo
    • Install the point release to X:/quake3/pointRelease
    • Install cygwin wherever. Just use the default options and it will download the required files from the internet. I installed to C:/cygwin
    • Extract noctemware's quake3ce to X:/quake3/q3ce
  5. Rename and Copy required files over
    • Navigate to quake3/demo/
    • Rename the folder "demoq3" to "baseq3"
    • Navigate to quake3/pointRelease/baseq3/
    • Copy pak1.pak through pak8.pak (should be everything in that folder)
    • Navigate to quake3/demo/baseq3/
    • Paste the pak1-8.pak files here.
  6. Run required .sh files with Cygwin - type these exactly, again, replacing X with your drive letter.
    • Run cygwin
    • cd X:/quake3/q3ce/pakconvert/
    • bash ./pakconvert X:/quake3/demo/
    • Let the script build your files for you (may take a little while to convert/compress everything to a smaller size)
  7. Copy the X:/quake3/q3ce/ folder onto your SD/CF card.
    • Optional - delete the pakconvert folder in q3ce folder.
    • Optional - create a shortcut to the q3ce.exe file in your start menu, this will save the memory of your file explorer running after the next step.
  8. Run the q3ce.exe on your PPC and enjoy!
    • Optional - email crioux with a huge thank you letter

If there are any errors or corrections, just let me know!

i have been unable to even get the game to start... just sits there with the window animation forever...

I also tried to set wisbar to not run on startup, soft reset and then tried to run it, but then get an error saying that q3ce is unable to run due to a required componant not loading... if i start wisbar, then exit it, the problem goes away

First time I ran Q3A got the menus ok but it hung loading the map. - Soft reset. 2nd time it played ok for the first map then hung loading the next map - soft reset, which put the Axim in a loop of the password box for a couple of seconds then restart, password box etc... Hard reset. I like Q3A but not enough to risk constant Hard resets.

I got it to work up to loading the first map. then it just sat there (Its too quiet. Im used to Q3 and a loading harddrive sound lol. ) anyway I never saw an intro video or anything it just dropped me to the menu. (now with the latest .pak converted and the latest files on the website the screen was white and the test was screwes up. Not sure what happened. Im going to try downgrading from WM5 to 2003 and give it another shot tonight.
