i've tried that, but it looks like it doesnt show anything that the built in task manager doesnt show. i'm thinking about killing programs such as poutlook.exe, and just get the bare minimum to fre e up memory to run q3.

If you aren't in the directory where the .sh script is, it won't do anything except show the next prompt ">" ready for some entry.

try doing "ls" without quotes to make SURE you SEE the pakconvert.sh file in the current directory first.

I ran ls and it shows the following files.
7za.exe
cp.exe
cygintl.dll
find.exe
rm.exe
msvcr70.dll
cut.exe
cygncureses-8.dll
grep.exe
unzip.exe
mediainfo.dll
cyginconv-2.dll
cygpcre-0.dll
ls.exe
zip.exe
basename.exe
cygintl-1, 2, 3
cygredline6.dll
mkdir.exe
bash.exe
cygin1.dll
mv.exe
convert.exe
ffmpeg.exe
pakconvert2.sh
My current command line is:
lorne@serpa4 /cygdrive/c/quake3/q3ce/pakconvert
$
I've run:
bash ./pakconvert C:/quake3/demo/
no such file or directory
bash ./pakconvert.sh c:/quake3/demo/
no such file or directory
bash ./pakconvert.sh c:\quake3\demo\
no such file or directory
bash ./pakconvert2.sh c:/quake3/demo/
Usage:pakconvert <path to quake 3 installation> C:/quake3/demo/ is not a valid Quake 3 installation directory!
and
bash ./pakconvert2.sh c:\quake3\demo\
and got ">"
Some times I get a "$" prompt after a command and sometimes I get ">" after a command. What is the difference?
Can anyone help with the bash program? It just isn't working "user error probably".

With 1.1b, it still does nothing when I start it.

Just got my X50v with 128MB upgrade. Tried Quake 3 and it works. It appears that it was a memory problem. Although some boards are a bit slow. Was getting 4-5 FPS with 1.1b build. Also it crashes when changing settings, like turning off vertex lighting and setting textures to low res. Hope this is fixed soon :)

BTW, I'm running Windows Mobile 5.

I am running an x51v high with 153mb storage left, 32MB prgram left, and a 512MB SD card. I keep getting "not enough memory" when i try to load the EXE..

Yeah, it doesn't work with WM5 on x51v since it's memory hungry.

Does this work on any axim that doesn't have a 128mb upgrade?

I'm thinking about flashing back to wm2003se soon, wondering if having a clean install of that would allow me to quake it up.

I'm the proud (not as proud now) new owner of an Axim x51v which cost me a lot of mustered money to buy... Have been waiting for it with much anticipation of being able to play things such as Q3ce... but alas it does not work.

I am aware it's some kind of memory consumption issue that WM5 has with the device etc. etc. but will this be resolved? - Man I hope so...

Yarg

So, can someone clarify for me [after reading through this whole thread] what the WM5/X51v issue is? - Is it something that can be resolved by the Q3ce programmer, by Dell, or by M$?

One confused guy here :rolling:

Basically you need about 35Mb (right?) free ram for it to run. I've done my best on my axim to free up as much memory as possible and only got to 32Mb.

This can be solved by:
- the quake3 programmer (although he has said that at a certain point you simply can't make a program smaller than it is.. I hope that this isn't the case..)
- Dell (they could cut down their rom size. But uhm. What's the last time you saw an update to a program that actually used less disk space than the previous version? Don't hold your breath)
- Microsoft (See 'Dell' - in theory they might be able to do it.)
- You? It might be possible to do some ROM modding yourself (http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=111244)
- More you? In theory WM5 reserves quite a bit of memory for 'caching'. Now of course you don't want to kill performance but I'm sure some 3Mb could be taken out of there if you only knew how.. registry?

So far your best hope is the Q3 programmer.

Well, I've got a history as a system and ROM tinkerer... I've played around and had to hard reset my x51v once, and SD-flash it once as well........

Not going there again lol

Oh well... for now CUBE is keeping me very entertained... I wouldn't mind so much if there isn't a remedy anymore... plus I can compile the CUBE src to make fun mods

Thanks for the clarification!

  1. First things first... since this is still in development, I recommend you backup your device.
  2. Close everything you have running on your PPC down. This includes Today plug-ins, and Wisbar, or any other kind of closer program - they all take up memory you NEED.
  3. The things we are going to have to download. All of my links are for either fileshack, cygwin, or noctemware. If you don't have an account for fileshack I recommend you set one up.
  4. Now that we have the required files, we can start installing/extracting them. I recommend you create a folder called quake3, replace the X with your drive letter.
    • Install the demo to X:/quake3/demo
    • Install the point release to X:/quake3/pointRelease
    • Install cygwin wherever. Just use the default options and it will download the required files from the internet. I installed to C:/cygwin
    • Extract noctemware's quake3ce to X:/quake3/q3ce
  5. Rename and Copy required files over
    • Navigate to quake3/demo/
    • Rename the folder "demoq3" to "baseq3"
    • Navigate to quake3/pointRelease/baseq3/
    • Copy pak1.pak through pak8.pak (should be everything in that folder)
    • Navigate to quake3/demo/baseq3/
    • Paste the pak1-8.pak files here.
  6. Run required .sh files with Cygwin - type these exactly, again, replacing X with your drive letter.
    • Run cygwin
    • cd X:/quake3/q3ce/pakconvert/
    • bash ./pakconvert X:/quake3/demo/
    • Let the script build your files for you (may take a little while to convert/compress everything to a smaller size)
  7. Copy the X:/quake3/q3ce/ folder onto your SD/CF card.
    • Optional - delete the pakconvert folder in q3ce folder.
    • Optional - create a shortcut to the q3ce.exe file in your start menu, this will save the memory of your file explorer running after the next step.
  8. Run the q3ce.exe on your PPC and enjoy!
    • Optional - email crioux with a huge thank you letter

If there are any errors or corrections, just let me know!

Here're some of my Cygwin-related remarks (it didn't work with me either at first, but fortunately I'm pretty well versed in Linux-related stuff and, therefore, was able to find out the cause for the problem at once):

Cygwin wouldn't start at all...

When you run Cygwin and the console window is only shown for a second, go to C:\cygwin\, edit cygwin.bat to insert a single 'pause' row at the end so that you can see what it says. Typically, it'll be something as follows:

@echo off

C:
chdir C:\cygwin\bin

bash --login -i
pause

Mostly, the cause for Cygwin's inability to start will be a cygwin1.dll somewhere in the path (or, an already-running program is using it, even if it's not in the Path). Use either Total Commander's Find File module (Alt-F7) or the built-in file finder in Windows to find all occurrences of cygwin1.dll. Note that you will also need to remove cygwin1.dll from c:\quake3\q3ce\pakconvert\ too (but nothing else!) so that it doesn't crash with (the newer) c:\cygwin\bin\cygwin1.dll !

Nothing works – not the bash command; not even listing files (ls); only internal commands

This means the c:\cygwin\bin\ directory isn't in PATH. After cygwin has started, enter the following two commands:

PATH='/cygdrive/c/cygwin/bin'
export PATH

Ok, now I can issue the ls command and see what files there are in the current directory, but I still get the bash: ./pakconvert: No such file or directory error message upon running pakconvert.sh!

Make sure you add the .sh extension to pakconvert when entering the command as follows:

bash ./pakconvert.sh c:/quake3/demo/

Now, pakconvert.sh is found and starts but it reports a lot of error messages like the following:

c:\quake3\q3ce\pakconvert\grep.exe (1276): *** proc magic mismatch detected - 0x
C87757A7/0xD94C588A.
This problem is probably due to using incompatible versions of the cygwin DLL.
Search for cygwin1.dll using the Windows Start->Find/Search facility
and delete all but the most recent version. The most recent version *should*
reside in x:\cygwin\bin, where 'x' is the drive on which you have
installed the cygwin distribution. Rebooting is also suggested if you
are unable to find another cygwin DLL.

The explanation for this is very simple: you haven't deleted c:\quake3\q3ce\pakconvert\cygwin1.dll. Do it now. After this, the conversion will start.

Unfortunately, WM5 devices are bound to have little memory available. That is, I don't think the (as of the latest, A06 x51v ROM upgrade is concerned) current 31-32M available memory will/can be considerably extended.

With it, 1.1b doesn't even start - it refuses to run at once.
