Jawbreaker - what's that row of balls?

I've Googled for this and can't find the answer. In Jawbreaker, below the grid of balls there is a row of balls that changes in color and number as you play.

Does anyone know what the heck this is for? I keep thinking it's some kind of hint about what colors to pick, but I can't seem to figure it out.
