Saw this question on another post, but it didn't get answered, since the original post was another topic.
Anyway, whenever I play AOE PPC, I never have any problems winning. The computer never attacks, and just stays in the tool age. I usually play 2 players, hardest setting, random map, conquest.
When I finally decide to smack em around, it's just too easy. I like challenging games, and never use cheats, but this just ain't cuttin' it.
Anybody else have this problem and know how to fix it?
I don't know how to fix that particular problem, but I do know that you can download the user created scenarios and campaigns for the PC version and play them with the PPC version. You may be able to find a more challenging one to play that way.

That was good info. I tried a couple, and it does work. Some seem pretty challenging, but others are buggy. They'll spontaneously shut down, or I'll just win without doing anything.
There's a link to it in MyPDA. Also, Numskull, have you tried playing against multiple computer opponents? I usually play against 4 or so other computer opponents. When I do this, usually 1 of them will stay stuck in the tool age, but the rest aggressively expand in hardest mode. The AI still gets predictable, but it makes for a much more challenging game. The best challenge for me is 5 computer opponents, large map size, hidden map, no fixed positions, nomad starting age, and hardest difficulty level.
Thanks for pointing out that downloadable campaigns work! I'd never have guessed myself. On this same note, does anyone know where a patch to 1.25 is? I've always had 1.07 and there's no friggin delete button. I know where it's supposed to be, but it's not there. If you wall something off and the computer doesn't destroy it, you have to shoot your own catapults at it. I've exhausted google and still haven't found any sort of patch.
Most PPC software doesn't have patches, per se. The best way to get the most recent version is to redownload from the place you purchased it. If you purchased it at a store, you may want to email the developer.

Also note that version 1.25 was issued by MDM after they purchased the rights to the game from Zio. If you redownload the newest version of the game, you may need to aquire a new registration key directly from MDM. The old registration key you were using with version 1.07 will no longer work. I found this out the hard way, but MDM responded to my email quickly with a new registration key.
