I am guessing that it could be emulated pretty well on the newer devices.. i have been playing warcraft 2 on my x50v quite a bit lately

I think starcraft is overrated, but a port sounds nice

It is considered the best video game of all time lol, it's not exactly overrated seeing as it's still the top strategy game out.

I love starcraft!! I would download it! It's not overrated. It has 3 well-balanced races, simple but not too simple. Many different effective strategies. And just fun! Crank up your subwoofer when firing the Arclite Siege Cannon! WHOOM!!

Could you be a bit more specific? What emulator are you using? Bochs?

Incidentally, Age of Empires is released for pocketpc. A similar game, at least.

there are a few threads on it, but a Russian developer has ported it to ppc. more accurately it ports Stratagus which is a different engine, but the effect is pretty much the same.. you do need to have the pc version as you will need the original graphics

runs quite nicely in VGA on my x50v though is fairly memory intensive.

here is the official site.
http://n0p.averest-k.ru/?Stratagus_%26amp%3B_Wargus

and a couple forum links if you have trouble setting it up..

A very big problem with the port:

1. current Pocket PC's are just not powerful enough. Remember that the game was very slow and laggy, especially in multiplayer mode with more than 3-4 players and many units, on anything under a P-100. Pocket PC's are far less powerful than even a P-100 (see for example http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/abou...luster.html?en on this).

2. to be able to play the game effectively, you must have a keyboard - not just the two-button mouse. Without a keyboard, no serious Starcraft player would play. Given the number of keyboards currently "deployed", I don't think anyone would find it lucrative to port the game.

Not true, the 2700g is a graphics accellerator that accellerates more than just 3D shapes. It can smooth images, and also image blitting etc. But in general it wouldn't be the bottleneck I guess.

Not true either I think :) Of course it all depends on what pocketpc you are comparing to what PC, but I think for all intents and purposes, the axim x50v system is comparable to a Pentium 3 900 on average and at least a P3-500. (certainly, 1mhz != 1mhz when comparing different processors but simply comparing things like divx decoding capabilities shows you this is not too far off the reality). The thing that a pocketpc is NOT good at is 'I/O' i.e. data transfers. This is also what would be limiting building a cluster, the nodes cannot communicate with eachother efficiently enough.

Anyway, if you try wargus for pocketPC you will see that warcraft2 runs perfectly fine on an x50v (http://n0p.averest-k.ru/). Starcraft2 is nearly the same engine, there's no reason this won't work.

Depends I suppose. There is no way a pocketpc player could beat a PC player with the same skill. But on the flip side, the same holds true for first person shooters on consoles (with a 'controller') compared to the same game on a PC with a mouse. The real question you should be asking if the game can give you a satisfying experience and I think that the answer can be 'yes'. You probably just need to set the game difficulty to easy.

But what remains is that currently not that many pocketpc's will give you a satisfying experience (only the very latest VGA ppc's, in my opinion), so game producers will not have too much incentive yet to build their games for ppc.

OIC. Thanks for the info - I don't know much about the 2700g, programming/caapbilities-wise.

SC is much more heavy on graphics - think of the heavily animated sprites, for example. I don't think a Pocket PC would be able to cope with animating hundreds of units on the same screen at the same time. Even a P100 slows down greatly if you try to do so.

A, say, 486DX33 could run the "static-looking" WCII without problems, but not Starcraft. These two games are really different, hardware requirement-wise.

Well, if the PPC player has a two-button mouse and a keyboard, why not? :) On VGA PPC's (assuming they are able to run a decent port with a sufficient speed), the GUI would then be the same (don't forget that Starcraft also "only" has VGA resolution, no more.)
