DOS emulatation doesn't really work well. It is easier to find a port for most of the games. Tomb raider didn't run in emulation at all- i tried

It depends on what you mean by 'old'. Games that run even on an IBM PC/XT? Most probably, PocketDOS will be able to run them too.

I've written, for example, an article about running Legend's old adventure games under PocketDOS at http://pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13745

Yes I saw your article on PocketDOS gaming a little while ago and was very excited to play Time Quest on my PPC, but after downloading the latest version of PocketDOS (demo) and installing the Time Quest files as you mentioned, I could not get it to run at all on either an x51v or an HTC Universal. Is this a WM 5.0 issue? Is there a fix? I'd really like to play this game!

The PPC version of Tomb Raider will run fine on an x51v. I have read the post where it says the onscreen buttons are incorrect when run on an Axim, but on mine they are just as they should be, so I don't know what that's about. Now granted it is only QVGA, but the game itself is identical to the old DOS version.
