Glenn Cochrane, who is well-known for his games for the open-source gaming console
GP2X (pay a visit to the page if you're into handheld gaming - it's definitely worth it!), has just released a Pocket PC port of his new top-down shooter,
Zigon X, for the GP2X. It’s available
here for download and is compatible with all Pocket PC 2002+ (yes, it IS compatible with the Pocket PC 2k2 – as opposed to what, say, FreewarePPC
states, and, one-button-registration button aside, is pretty well running even on my iPAQ 3660) platforms. The only device it’s not compatible is the WM5-upgraded hx4700. (Tested on the
iPAQ 3660, 2210, Pocket Loox 720, x51v and the
WM5-upgraded hx4700.)
No, don’t run to download it – it’s quite bad (as far as the current, v0.8 alpha version is concerned). It’s one of the very few (the other, remarkable one is
AngelFish by
Fathammer) top-down shooters that
can’t be controlled with the stylus. Furthermore, there is no autofire functionality and the fire button (either Calendar, Contact or the E2C button on the PL720) is VERY hard to keep depressed in landscape mode along with controlling the D-pad. Needless to say, you can’t reassign the button.
Note that, upon the first run, it’ll start in
Stage 2 with really a lot enemies on the screen and a very nonresponsive operation. After dying, it’ll switch back to Stage 1 with far less enemies and far better gameplay.
All in all, look elsewhere for a decent top-down shooter. Alternatively, if you need a free, but still decent one, check out

Roundup of All Pocket PC Games Part I. And, if you don’t mind shelling out some cash for a really decent shooter, get
