Hi there. I have a palm pilot but I've dreamed for years of having a decent portable gaming device (Like one that can run emulators, etc). I knew pocketpcs could handle it, but at $500, I couldn't justify buying an Ipaq.
Now The Axim 300 is $180 and that's a very tempting price for me... But the question I don't know the answer to is: Will it fulfill my needs? Would I need the 400? I know you can overclock the 400 to 500mhz... Can you OC the 300 model? How is the d-pad? I've read a review that said it's smooshy... Does it work well for gaming? Does it seem well built enough not to break quickly? Will it run a snes emulator at full speed? I read the other thread on this topic and someone said the small screen wasn't good for gaming... But the axim's screen is bigger than the gba's screen, it seems, so it should be fine, no? Thanks for helping me decide on this purchase!

Dell Axim is absolutely great for gaming
This is my first PDA and I just love it! The d-pad is great, it is actually more like a joystick than a normal d-pad. More soft. Having said that you might want to consider buying a Ipaq if you have big fingers. Mines kind of small Another great thing is the replaceable battery and the HIGH- CAPACITY battery (a little expensive), which will keep you playing no matter what!! Note that the IPAQ don't have a replaceable battery. And finally there is the ability to expand memory with compactflash and SD-cards. And with headphones the sound are outstanding!

I play mine with pocketNester the NES emulator and it works perfectly. My friends that have large fingers have had a little trouble because they would hit the action buttons as well as the directional pad at the same time, but most people have no problems I've found. Plus you could always adjust your action buttons and program them to different keys.
I am a little worried to be using the 4 buttons so much (the calander and inbox, etc.) but I think overall they will hold up reasonably well. I am going to buy either a game controler (if they come out with one) or a snap on keyboard soon, I think. Overall, I like playing games on the Axim more then playing them on GBA or the such, becuase I like the screen better and think that the graphics look more crisp. Others might differ on that opinion though. I say go with the 400 because you can pick them up for reasonable prices and you wont have to worry about having the power if you need it in the future. -Rotz

The axims gamepad is no em-500's gamepad, but its ALOT better than the ipaqs.
The ipaqs gamepad can only produce one function at a time. I use mine for mostly gaming and multimedia. And i can say it is a great gaming machine. At only 80$ more than a gba this thing rocks!. The gba's graphics are pitiful when you look at the axim. Now tell me that a gba can run ageofempires. And if you look at these graphics, you will not want a gba, unless you dont consider what this thing can do. go here...... http://www.xengames.com/ Also check out www.pocketgamer.org for more games and news. ![]()

Get the 400, worth the extra $.Games galore to play. Everyone is trying to create a plug-in gamepad, when that happens it WILL be the best. Try these games; QBob, Billiard Master, Marble Worlds, DevilDarts, and Cubicle Chaos. All are demos worth playing except Cubicle Choas(complete game). You will probably purchase full version like I have, they all have great graphics and very good sound FX.

I have to admit that I probably use my Axim 80% of the time for gaming. I have actual PPC games, and I have an emulator and ROMs. Right now I am playing the second Final Fantasy for the NES. The D-Pad is not perfect, but it is not nearly as horrible as some people say it is.
As for SNES emulation, it is not "full speed" but the developer of Morph Gear (a multi system emulator) is constantly improving the SNES module. It works decently if all you want to play is RPGs (which is what I tend to play).
