I have never played Civilization. Does Age of Empires compare?
It's that time of year again. I need a new holiday avatar... Is there anyone up to the challenge?

I really do not think there is a Civilization Look Alike. Boy that was a fun game. I would recommend Age of Empires and Warfare INC.

Warfare is awesome! Especially now that the multiplayer option has been implemented! You should definately check it out!

If your looking for a Civilization game then only two come to mind... One of which is free...

Warring States... is a good game that fits the description.. but it is an abridged verion that does not play very long. You are limited to the lifetime of your character to unite China... But I think you will find it very similar to the early stages of Civ.

Kings Crown is the second game... this one is a commercial production that has more depth than Warring States.. It is not exactly like Civ but then what is... but it has a lot of the gaming components that keep you wanting to play. You are limited to only one army... which I understand with the limited playing field. But like Civ its about upgrading resources... building bigger castles and armies... keeping your people happy... and going to war.

If you are a Civ junkie... you will find something to like about each of these games... My only real disappointment it the weak graphics in some of the screens...

Oh... and PocketDOS... is about ready for a new release that will allow you to play the original Civ 1 on your PocketPC...

Besides this.... there is a Pocket X-Com... that I have yet to try... that you can find here...

http://www.smksoftware.ru/pufo.shtml

I am not convinced it works since I unzipped it and was able to run the exe out of my WindowsXP explorer... I will make an effort to load it into my PocketPC... to see what happens...

I guess Ages of Empire would compare although I think it does not go as far in time as Civilization.

One game I'ld like to put my hands on is Avalon Hill's (now part of Wizard of the coast) version of Civilization. It's based on their board game.

The one major difference with Age of Empires and Civilization is that it is RTS (Real Time Strategy) versus turn based... There are not many games that have the depth of Civ... and are turn based games in this day where people like to have things happening all the time with eye candy... Civ is a bit of a through back where you can plod along and take your time planning the small battles in hopes of winning the big war at the end. I love that game... just never have the time to play it anymore. Can still remember the nights of just one more turn hon... until my alarm clock went off for work...

I still don't know anything about Civilization, but if you are looking for turn based gaming, have you seen Lands of Shadowgate? It's only in beta right now but looks pretty good.
