I have some questions because I have been playing for a couple of days and haven't been doing very well because I get lost and end up going around in circles. Supposedly there is a map function, but I can't find it.

To get to the map whilst playing the game press the in game menu button, this is one of the configurable buttons, select inventory and the map is one of the items you hold in your inventory.
