Pocket Gnuboy doesn't read the D-pad properly...

I recently got an old Axim X30 from my local Freecycle list and wanted to get it set up as a Gameboy. Seeing as pocket Gnuboy seems to be the only complete free GB/GBC emulator, I downloaded and installed it. Performance-wise, I've got no complaints, but something is really bugging me: I can't use my Axim's physical D-pad. When I went to set it up, the up and down directions mapped perfectly, but left and right both mapped to button code 0x84 and pressing left and right seems to do nothing in any game. I really don't like having to use the onscreen d-pad, so any help on how to make the real one work would be much appreciated.
