Run SNES emulation at 20+ FPS w/ sound

Okay, some people already know how, but for those who don't I'll post it here and make it simple.

1) You NEED Pocket Windows 2003. There was about a 20 FPS increase with the upgrade to 2003 with all other things remaining equal.

2) Get PocketSNES Bleedingedge. Its free and fast.

3) Get RegKing and use it to set Glyph Cache to 32k to improve game performance.

Step 4 is optional because I'm not sure just how valuable doing this is, but it does seem to raise FPS a bit.

4) Get Pocket Hack Master, the best overclocking software out right now. I overclock to 600 mhz with 100 mhz ram x 4 = 400 mhz normal x 1.5 giving 600 mhz turbo. 27 x 4 x 1.5. You can experiment to see what works best for you.

This was done on an X5 Basic and a PX255 processor, so I'm not sure how the PX250 will work, but ANY PX255 X5 should run SNES emulation at playable frames with sound. Also, the test game was Donkey Kong Country.

Good luck with your emulation:)

ps I'm getting 23-25 FPS w/ echo & stereo sound

Just out of curiosity, but why would you need stereo sound on your axim? Whats the FPS without it? Thats awesome that you can get that FPS. Gotta try it now!

yeah, but I just think a couple more FPS could outweigh stereo. But if there's no performance gain or loss, it would be worth it. (just my opinion)

Hi there,

Would this setup work with an Axim x3i? I don't want to screw anything up on my new handheld, but if this would work with mine I would like to give it a go. One other question; would the RegKing program add gaming performance to other games or does it just work in conjunction with PocketSNES? I thank you in advance for your help.

Hi, please excuse my newbieness, but what exactly is RegKing and how exactly does Glyph Cache do? I've been able to reach veery playable framerates with my X5 PXA250 400Mhz with SNES games. Here is how:

1. Download Morphgear at www.morphgear.com (It comes with many emulation modules but most of them cost $$ but the SNES one is free and faster than PocketSNES :) )

2. After installing Morphgear go into the Program Files/Games/Morphgear/Emu on your PPC and delete all of the .dll files except for the SNES dll.

3. Load games onto PPC and some, if not most SNES games should run like god (~60 FPS). It really helps to disable the sound on the slower machines. I've been able to run Super Mario World, Super Punchout, Super Mario Allstars, F-Zero, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and some others at 50-60 FPS.

I find it hard to believe that your PXA250 Axim is playing at 60fps on SNES games. I'm not doubting your truthfulness or anything, but think that maybe you are simply mistaken about how to interpret the FPS numbers.

The numbers in MorphGear will look something like "FPS: 55/60 (14)"

The number in ( ) will be the true rendered fps. So in this case, the game is truly only displaying 14fps. Heck, not even an X3i running at Max FPS gets 60fps on SNES....and it definately outperforms even the PXA255 X5's on emulators.

Oops, sorry, I was refering to the FPS displayed in the fraction. The number in the () tends to fluctuate a lot.
