I am about to purchase an Axim X3i for use at work ... and I would really love to get a hold of these games if at all possible --- I loved playing them years ago ... I know there are other fantasy roleplaying games available --- and they may be as good ... but I would just love to get these 2 again if possible...
Do I need an emulator? Are these games available for pocket pc anywhere? I saw that Ultima IV is freeware at this point -- but I do not believe that I could use it on a pocket pc ...
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated ... worst case, I just have to play one of the pocket pc specific games (sounds like there are a few good ones already) ...
Thanks again!
PS - what about other old time games? (i.e. Pool of Radiance series, bard's tale, etc....)
Legacy is awesome!
*boohoo* I just had to start all over again due to SD card problems. My party members were up to like level 15, now back at 1. But it's still a great game! :D
I definitly understand the restriction on ROMs (I understand the concept of ROM - what does the acronym stand for?)
Also -- are there any 3rd person FRPGs that are good? From what I saw, Legacy and Ultima Underworld are both 1st person --- btw, between those 2, which is best? I am looking for a game that can keep me occupied for a while --- where I can increase character stats and equipment .... but where a few minutes at a time can also be fun (i.e. I have 5 minutes to waste, I can play this and still have some fun)
Thanks again!
BTW - do you know if there are any plans or anything for upcoming legal releases of those aforementioned games? (either Ultima's or Bards Tale or Pool of Radiance)
ROM stands for Read Only Memory. The term is often used to refer to the digital copies of cart based games (CD based games transferred to a PC are generally called ISO's).
The only third person RPGs right now are the Pocket Everquest series, I think. These were fun, but the story line is very limited. However, E-Soft Interactive is working on one.
The good thing about Legacy, other than Redshift's customer support, is that they plan on releasing a level editor so that people can create their own maps/quests and make them however long, or short, they want them to be. So there could be an unlimited amount of play-time available. Right now I am on my 49th "game day" and am only about half way through. I think I have been playing off and on for around three to four weeks. They are also in the process of making an expansion pack. It will be less than $10, but be around the same size as the current world, if not larger. There is also a level with a short quest already available to download.
To me, Ultima Underworld was actually a little TOO complex. And the sellers, Zio Interactive seem to have almost disappeared.
There is a trial available for both games, though, so you can give them a try and see which YOU like best.
Hope this helped.

If you are still interested in emulating these games, there were versions of both games released for both the Commodore 64 and NES. Here's a link to the C64 emulator at clickgamer (only $6.95). I use Morphgear for most of my emulation, but the NES module is 20 big ones. I used to use Pocket Nester available here at freewareppc.com. PocketNES is another free option.
I've been an Ultima fan since Ultima 3, myself, and I still log on to Ultima Online when I'm extremely bored (I've just played the game to death :rolling: ).
While many people seem to vehemently prefer games made specifically for the ppc platform over emulation, I have always enjoyed both. Legacy, for example, has been great so far.
I definitly appreciate the information ... are they available for purchase in those formats or through freeware? (The Ultima games that is) - I am happy to buy the emulators as well if that is what I need to go to get the games
All hope is not lost! I posted a response a while back in regards to a member looking to play Autoduel. All you need is an apple][ emulator for ppc (appleCE is FREE among others). Obtain the disk image for the games (.dsk extension) and there you have it - Ultima on the go!!
I was talking to a friend about these types of games -- he told me that it was perfectly legal to download a ROM if you have at one time purchased the game already - does anyone know if this is true? I have the games up in my attic ... in fact I have bought them several times over (the compilations and the original)
Most websites hoping to keep things nice and legal regarding their distribution of roms always include a disclaimer saying (in so many words):
You may download a game ROM ONLY if you can do so legally. This means you must own the actual cartridge (or other media the ROM was distributed on) of the ROM you are downloading. This includes the EXACT ROM version and ROM revision that matches your original arcade machine hardware.Under the copyright laws of the U.S., you are entitled to own a backup of any software you have paid for. Since ROMS cannot be backed up without expensive machines that not everyone has access to, the ROM images here are provided to the public as a service. Most countries have similar laws but it is your responsibility to know the laws of the country you reside in.
An article I read recently stated that "you can legally download a Rom without owning the cartridge if you delete the file within 24 hours". How true this is, I don't know. In a reply to the article, one person refuted this statement vigorously :crooked:
I don't know the particulars. I don't know the laws regarding this. If any members do have additional information, please feel free to chime in :hide:
