Just downloaded "Snowed In". Just an ok game so I went to delete it by "remove program"" function under settings, remove programs.. Well you can't delete it because it says Program Files\Games\snowedIn\gx.dll "Uninstall unsuccessful. The program was not removed because these files are in use or are read-only." Tried several time closing all programs. No good. You can go to "file explorer" and then find the Snowed in folder. Then you can hold the stylus on it and then opt for delete. That does not help either because the same stinkin dll file is still not deleted. Can anyone tell me how to delete this game?

Probably won't work either, but....
While cradled, and connected, go to Activesync on the PC and click EXPLORER.

Then browse to the file and try to delete it...

desiv, you are the Man..... thanks so much... I was able to delte the suspect file from my PC ActiveSync-explore fuction.. Then I went to the games folder and the Icon was still there on the Axim. Then I went to add remove programs and was able to get rid of the last of it from the Axim..... Thanks again.. :D

I haven't tried deleting mine yet as it is a nice little diversion for free. I just haven't been able to figure out how to get a score over 30,000 lol. I guess I suck, since many posted scores were higher.

Anyway the gx.dll file is one that other programs might use other than Snowed in. I have found it easier to remove programs/files through the desktop to the PPC rather than in the PPC itself.

Actually, gx.dll comes with the Axim, so the one with snowed-in should be at the least, redundant, and at worst, OLD..
(Can't imagine it's newer, but I haven't seen it..)

Might try deleting it, and seeing if snowed-in will still run.

I've installed several program that have asked to overwrite gx.dll and said no to all, with no bad effects. (Good thing snowed-in at least puts it inside IT'S directory...)

It's nice when programs respect the windows directory.

gx.dll is a graphics dll. It is part of the operating system. Sometimes programs bring their own gx.dll with their own extensions included. The install should have asked if the gx.dll installed was older than the one on the Axim. Snowed In was, I think a newer game, so it may have had a newer gx.dll. No biggie if you deleted it, but it probably wasn't doing any harm (other than occupying a tiny 8.57K of space).

I'd be interested to know if snowed-in actually has a newer gx.dll.. Axim is so new, I would doubt it. More likely, since they copy it into their own directlry, they don't bother to check, but I haven't tried it..
(Cradle is at work, I have to be REALLY motivated to download something with the laptop and Infrared it over if I'm at home.)

I might get so motivated tho, just to see...

The gx.dll file is actually on your desktop PC not the Axim. If you delete it first, then you can uninstall with no problem. The gx.dll is used with iPaq. Here is an explaination from Snowed In's website:

Help! I cannot uninstall a product !
The problem could be gx.dll (a graphics library using by GAPI). It is standard system file in the new releases of IPAQ, but is included in clickgamer installations so that ipaq 3600 series can work. As a defence mechanism WindowsCE will not allow you to delete a system file such as gx.dll. The only way to 'completely uninstall' is to delete gx.dll manually from the product folder using windows explorer (ie. when the ppc is synced with the desktop PC). Note - ensure 'show all files' option is checked in Windows File Explorer else system files such as gx.dll will remain hidden.

Hope this helps,
Shannon

Actually, from that description, sounds like it IS on the PDA, but as a hidden system file, which is probably why it didn't show up in the search. The one provided by snowed in probably isn't hidden.

I can't check it out until I get to work. Cradle's there.. :-)

Axim's "soft reset" usually helps to clear read-only file status.

The golden rule of Windows "When in doubt, reboot" works for PocketPCs, too.

I believe the original version of gx.dll is actually in ROM. When an application provides a "replacement" it puts the new version in /windows or some known location where the operating system finds it. When gx.dll is called, the default search path is to look in /windows, then the ROM for the file. That pathing mechanism lets MS, or anybody else, for that matter, update some software parts without having to re-flash the ROM. All they have to do is put a file of the same name in /windows and it will be found before the ROM version. MS has updated some files a couple of times in the past using this approach.
