Turn based strategy for the PPC

I'm a dedicated lurker coming out of hiding here because this site seems to have such a good community - I have to ask around.

I tend to only have small pockets of time to play, and I enjoy turn based games that I can set aside and pick up later. It's harder to do with RTS and FPS games. I'm also a bit old school.

I do enjoy card games, and there is currently a good beta for VGA solitaire over at pdamill.com, but strategy is my first choice. One of my favorite games from the past has been Pocket Slay. It works with 2003, but the screen refresh suffers slightly unless you use true VGA (like OzVGA). Still, the game has had great replay and good designer support - I'd like to find something new that would be as addictive.

I've been looking at two games that might also be good, Pocket War and Warlords II. Anyone play either of those that has a good word to put it, or do you have another turn based strategy game you've found good? I pay for some games I play, but my budget dictates that I limit it to only the best Freeware can be good, but frequently limited.

Thanks in advance for all your help and advice! :approve:

*edit* Just got a new Axim x50v and have been tweaking per suggestions on this site, so wanted to let people know what I'd be using. Yes, Enigmo is a GREAT puzzle game, but you can't put it down in the middle of a game and pick it up later - you can only save between levels.

I've played Pocket War and it's an interesting diversion when traveling on an airplane. I can't recommend anything in freeware. I've found for the most part that you get what you pay for. There is a freeware beta of a civilization clone out there for the pocket pc. This may be worth the time to search for.

I didn't really like WarLords II. There is a version of Age of Empires Gold for the PPC, and you can play the scenarious/campaigns that were created for the desktop version. I've heard that WarFare Incorporated is good, but haven't played it myself. Pocket War and Warring Nations are also both supposed to be good.

Thanks for the link for Pocket Humanity! I'll have to check that out!

Any other turn based strategy suggestions? Anyone else played Pocket War or Warlords II?

Civilization 1 (original) was ported to the Atari ST back in the day, so would run under CaSTaway emulator, as well.

I loved Warring Nations. I've still got it installed, actually. However it has limited replay value. Worth the $7.50 I paid for it (on special for 50% off), but I am not sure that I would pay full price for it. I have AOE lying around here somewhere, but I'm not much of a RTS person. I prefer turn based.

How can you not like Warlords 2. One of the best TBS games out there.

I liked playing the Warfare Inc. Demo; I'm likely going to buy it. It was a whole lot like playing Starcraft, except that the computer players didn't viciously murder me. Only thing is that all units take up uniform tiles on the map, barring that it would be just like most PC RTS games.

I remember seeing a VGA RTS game out there that looked great, but I can't remember what it was. It looked like a Command and Conquer game sorta. Anyone know which one I'm thinking of?

I'm surprised not to see mention of the following on this thread:

Aeon of Discovery

Warring States (freeware) (completely different from Warring Nations)

Strange Adventures in Infinite Space (more adventure than strategy, but the hidden values and features of the things you find adds a strategic element)

StormLine - I have only tried the demo, and I'm not sure I get it, but it is more tactical than the others, so if you like Slay, it might be up your alley.

This excludes all the Lemonade Tycoon/Tradewinds-type business simulation games that have touches of TBS.

For RTS, Argentum seems pretty slick from the demo.

I love this game because it is very addictive. It is the best strategy on ppc.
