New Freeware Game: Whirlwind 21 (UPD v1.3)

I wrote a clone of a web-based game I sometimes play (no names to keep me out of copyright trouble.)

You can find it here along with a screenshot:

http://www.cs.pitt.edu/~jmisurda/ppc/

It basically is a solitaire version of blackjack where you attempt to build piles of cards that total 21. When you are unable to make any more piles, the game is over.

This is an early version, but completely playable. The site lists some improvements I hope to make soon.

It is vga aware, and attempts to use the new cards included with WM2003 SE for solitaire. Older PPC's will also use the same cards as the built-in solitaire uses.

Let me know if there are any problems on your device.

Jon

Quite good, and always good news to have some new free games :approve:
But I find it a bit repetitive though. Don't know if I'll play that for long. Due to its little size, it got a permanent location on my SD card though.

Little advice: I think the +100 award to clear the board is a bit too much. Basically you gain all your points when beginning your game if you have luck and get several 21s in a row. +30 or so would be better IMHO. My 2pence.

Highscore to date = 384

my 546 score was done without the benefit of clearing the board ;)

I won't get into the high score debate since I've played it so much debugging that my high is 1000+ ;)

I've updated the game to version 1.2 which has some scoring changes, and the addition of a special card which clears an entire pile.

Still no installer.

Also, I moved the location I store the high score, so you will lose your high score. I apologise, and this should be the last time that will happen.

I lowered the score for clearing all the piles, and added a bonus when you exhaust the deck.

I know the game can get old, I didn't come up with the gameplay, and I can only add so much. It's still just a card game. However, it's more my style of game... I'm not always a fan of fullscreen, graphically intensive games. I like being able to switch easily to PIE or the today screen and come back to my game.

This is my first game for the Pocket PC, maybe i'll attempt something more exciting/ambitious in the future.

A Five Card Charlie is when you get 5 cards that don't total to 21, but it counts anyways and is cleared.

Glad you enjoy it.

Nice freebie

Came across this while checking out X50Mix. Looks and plays nice. Couldn't figure out how to change the card decks, though it sounds like it supports the ones used by Solitaire? Also, are there plans to let the user select either a timed or untimed game? Right now, the time counter doesn't really play a role.

Thanks,
del4

There are no card backs displayed, and thats the only thing thats customizable about the cards in solitaire. If I ever have reason to show a card back, then you'll be able to select your favorite.

As for the timer, yeah I know it doesn't do anything. I haven't decided what exactly to do there, and I'm not sure of what I would do.

Any suggestions?

display bug?

Jon, whenever I get the Game Over! dialog, the displayed Next Card is the last one played, not the next one coming up. If I drag the Game Over! dialog box over the displayed Next Card, or switch to another app then come back to the game, it updates the display to show the next card just fine.
