Beats of Rage released (freeware beat-em-up engine)

(Started a new thread since the older one is full of early-alpha fluff and might scare new eyes off.)

(Edit: Fixed and updated to beta 5)

Beats of Rage is a 'Beat Em Up' engine like Streets of Rage, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc, vageuly like the old Double Dragon games but much later in technology.. nice looking stuff. Team Senila created the engine and made the "Beats of Rage" MOD for it, but they opened it up so anyone else could create MOD's as well and so many dozen game MODs can be found, so its a fairly versatile piece of work.

This port should play any "BOR MOD" on your Pocket PC, including the very sexy Beats of Rage main MOD pictured above.

Check out my site for some info, links to MOD download sites and tools, etc, and feel free to Google around for a wide assortment of other sites:
http://www.codejedi.com/bor/

The current download is for Beta 5, here:

If for whatever reason you're broken, theres alphas alpha 3 which worked very well though lacked a few of the niceties in beta 4:

Install instructions are on the site and in the README, but essentially.. unzip it to SD or CF card or whatever, and run it from your device :) You can put additional PAK files in the same place and it'll let you pick them. The PAK included is the smallest one I know of.. a 3MB Castlevania mini-MOD to get you started. (I don't want thousands of people downloading the main 50MB PAK from me.. ouch!)

This should work great though as of Beta 5 audio is not yet implemented, but everything else should be great. Let me know what you think and I'll hopefully get audio sorted out in the next week or two. Its very playable as is :)

Ok have downloaded the zip file, read the readme and copied all 3 files onto my SD card. When I run the exe It gives me the message that

'No Beats of Rage files found'

Am i missing something?

Strange; where did you unzip them to? Whats the full path to the exe file? Everything is in the exact same place?

If all else fails, Alpha 3 should work for you as its dumber.. this one looks for a directory listing in the exe's location and shows a menu, while alpha 3 just assumes bor.pak flat out. But I'm surprised this isn't going if its all in the same place :/

Which device?

Whats on the display; is that the whole message or the first part of it? ie: If theres nothing found at all, it should likely say a 2 or 3 line thing on a black display.

Axim X50V...
Downloaded zip file to desktop (on PC)
Unzipped zip into folder called borce004beta
Coppied borce004beta folder into root folder on SD card (using reader)
Used file explorer to run exe.

Also tried moving files out of the folder and into the root of the sd card. still no joy.

It is a black screen with several lines of text which sounds like the one descibed in the readme file if you don't have a pak file

It is unfortunate I didn't have it include the path that it is looking into.

I'm using /SD Card/Programs/BORce with everything inside for what its worth

If you move it there, does it work?

Ah crap, you're right; I moved it up a level and now it fails to find the PAK files.

I'll make a beta 5 tonight when I find out why.

Very strange that it had a directory scan issue, but I've altered how it worked a touch and it seems to work for me now; see get Beta 5 :)

I'll edit the first post.

Let me know how it goes! All day and no comments about this one :( :)

A near flawless port, and nice to finally play a game on the x50v that doesn't look like an Amiga castaway.
Thank you.

Good to know its working for everyone :)

What do you think of the overlay buttons, or do you hide them right away? (I think they're important for newbies anyway, so they know what to do..)

I leave the overlays up right now. Still not able to hit the exact spot unless I see it. Must be a lack of coordination.

Other than the audio, seems to work very well, smooth and fast. You'll have a very good product when the sound is going. I'll be keeping this one on the PDA.
