I would like to buy some software for my Axim, specifically list, database and gaming software. What are the reliable sites for this? Has anyone bought from Handango?

Also, what is the best golf game? Best Chess game, coolest game?

What is the best list/database software?

When I buy PPC software I buy from pocketgear.com they are reliable, they also keep your profile so that you can logon at any time to re-download or get updates to any software that you have already bought from them.

I use http://www.handango.com . They also keep your information as long as you create an account and login when you buy something. This is also how you get updates to your software most of the time.
So far, I think the best chess game is ChessGenius (available at Handango). In PocketPCMag I saw an advertisement for a Chess game by Ziosoft that looked great, but I checked their website and haven't seen anything about it. As for my favorite games, right now I would have to say Age of Empires and PocketEverquest.

I get the majority of my software from Handango (they have a frequent buyer rewards program ). I have purchased from pocketgear with no trouble. Astraware has cool games. I am not big on chess, but you might enjoy their chess game - Rooks Revenge. It is a real time chess game... you don't take turns with the computer. You move as fast as you can

Handango is a good site, but their search engine is atrocious. Nevertheless, they seem to have the largest software library.

Why do you say that? Just because when you search for a program you get 100 matches? B)

Yeah, and on the few occasions I manage to narrow it down to something more manageable, more often than not what I'm looking for got excluded from the results.

Check out PDArcade. They don't sell games, but they do have lots of reviews and such.

There are a few games in retail stores, but not a lot. Most of the games for handhelds in retail stores are for Palm . There is one company that is taking some PPC games and releasing them on cd. The two games I can remember seeing are Tomb Raider and Snails, but I imagine that it will take awhile to do it.

A Sad Tale of PocketGear and Overheard Stories About Handango

Hello Bluto!

You asked about software purchases - and I wanted to tell you my brief little tale about Pocketgear.

I am a newbie with my Axim X30 - it was a present from Santa Claus - and on Dec. 26 I purchased the Riverland Screensaver from Pocketgear.

Thankfully it was only a $4.95 purchase - cause it appears to me that it is truly a lost cause.

They sent me an email with the registration code, etc...

The problem?? The code did not work.

I tried everything - uninstalling - reinstalling - re-downloading from Pocketgear, etc.....nothing worked.

I wrote to Pocketgear customer service three ( 3) times and also called their customer service and sat on hold for ten ( 10 ) minutes.....then was told by a recording that since I had been on hold for 10 minutes and I was important to them - I had to leave a voice message - which I did. They promised they checked their voice messages often - and someone would be in touch very soon.

Never heard a word! - Never got a email response from any of my three letters either.

So on January 14th - I wrote Pocketgear and requested a refund - stating quite clearly and nicely what all had happened.

Today, Jan. 19 - I finally got a response from PocketGear. They acknowledged my refund request and said they had to forward it to the actual developer for approval of my request.

This made me really sad - cause all I ever wanted was a working reg code so I could use the ONLY app I have purchaed for my new Axim - so far - After this experience - I have been scared to buy anything else!

While searching this forum for similar problems others might be having and what they did about it - I have also read some similar experiences with Handango....

I don't get it. These folks must do SO much business that they just don't care - or - they do so much business they don't have time to care....I don't know what it is!

I saw a post from some knowaledgeable person here on Aximsite who suggested to try and buy all your software DIRECT from developer if at all possible. I think that is the route I am going to take with the apps I have been trying out and would now like to buy.

Good luck to you!
Little Debbie

Update - Sad Tale Made HAPPY!!

An Update to my previous post:

When I said that today - Jan. 19th - I had finally received a letter from PocketGear saying they were forwarding my refund request to developer.........

19 MINUTES LATER - I got a letter from Alexey Tselykh, CIO, Handy Entertainment.

He sent me another Reg Code for Screensaver! Isn't he a smart man?

The code didn't work!!!!

I wrote him back and told him the problem...and WITHIN 5 MINUTES he wrote me back with another code....which DID work!!!!

Now I am HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!!!!

Mad

I too had a horrible experience with PocketGear. Having used Handango I expected all these PDA software sites to be the same. NOT!!

I bought two programs from PocketGear in one transaction. They billed my card but I never got the codes in mail. I sent 4 e-mails over 4 days and never a repsonse (not even a canned e-mail). Then I call, get the 10 minute hold, then get pushed to v-mail. When I attempt to leave a message it tells me the voice mailbox is full.

Finally after a few days of trying I managed to get someone on the phone and got my codes.

I will never shop from them again!!

Steve
