XWords (Scrabble) crashes my X5.

Has anyone used the freeware version of Scrabble, XWords, on their X5? It keeps freezing up my system and I have to do a soft reset.

Thanks.

Is the software compatible with the version of POCKET PC you have? (2002 or 2003). I just upgraded :approve: and I noticed that I couldn't turn my AXIM on again unless I do a soft reset. I just upgraded the driver and I was set...so check on that first.

If that doesn't fix it...which version do youy have?

I've tried versions 4.06, 4.1 beta 1 and 4.1 beta 4. They all crash. Other than the crashing the game is great so I would like to get it working.

Thanks.

The developer has been working on XWords recently ... and I just tried 4.1 beta 8 on my new X30 (PPC2003), and it seems to work great! :approve:

I used the .CAB file, and let it install itself into main memory.

Here is a link to the download site.

Eric House (the developer) had to deal the the issue that Microsoft doesn't want to address in their OS ... the poorly designed "OPEN FILE/SAVE AS" dialog, which only looks at specific directories on your PPC. So Eric chose to default XWords directory to be in a specific location so his program could find any files it uses.

If you go to the download site in the link I provided in my prior post, you can read the NOTES for each version, and see the issues Eric encountered, and how they were addressed.

I plan to write to Eric to thank him for fixing the program so it works in PPC2003. I'll mention the SD card issue. I ran into it too. I think the reason we are having the problem, is because XWords is checking for a directory called \SD Card\Crosswords, while our Dell Axims have this directory called \Storage Card\Crosswords. Maybe Eric can set up XWords so it checks for both of these directory names?

But I'm really glad it now works on PPC 2003 !!! It's one of my all-time favorite games !!! :)

I sent the following e-mail to the developer, Eric House, and received his reply:

I bet you're right on all counts. My device has slots for both types
of cards, but I've never even tried a CF card in it. As you guess,
it's trivial for me to add "\Storage Card\Crosswords" to the list
that's searched, so I definitely want to try that before taking the
riskier approach of adding a file browser and saved preference.

So I'm guessing we should have a fix for the SD Card issue in the near future. :)
