Before I had my Axim, I had a Casio EM-500, and a Toshiba E310. Compared to the other two Pocket PC's, the Axim is the king of gaming. I think the quality of the controls is comparable to a gameboy. It feels like it was built for gaming. I am very impressed with it.

i only play monopoly, chess, and tennis on mine (its no coincidence that none require the d-pad). Initially i thought i would be playing a lot of games on it, but as it turned out the controls and tiny screen are not conducive to extended play. So if your primary purpose is gaming, a gameboy is much better suited.

I still reckon the EM500 was >slightly< better control wise ...and the other downside is that the ax's buttons ,are in the opposite places of their Ipaq equivilents..so some games give you left hand controls...handy for the citeogs (gaelic slang for lefties!!) but a pain for us right handers ...

I also had a Casio EM-500 before the Axim, and the controls were slightly better. But I play games constantly on my Axim with no or little trouble at all.

Much like Raynne, I also play a lot of games (using the D-Pad and buttons) while killing time in some of my not-so-informative classes. They work great for me.....never had a problem with them. And the D-Pad still works fine for regular functionality as well.

It is nice to hear people say the D-Pad works good. I was worried about that. I will find out tomorrow when my Axim arrives. These past 4 days have been he!!.

Patience, guys. It will come. Then, it's time to have fun. I had to return my first Axim Advance unit, because of a faulty D-pad. they replaced it right away and the replacement has a good d-pad.

It is great for games and stuff. Just make sure to check everything from parts to programs before you install/download anything.

That completely depends upon your expectations...

If you're looking for something only for games, you might want to reconsider spending $300 on a PocketPC. I was introduced into the handheld market with an old Palm we had at work (they wanted us to start supporting handhelds and we had one that was passed around in our department). Shortly after that I purchased a Jornada 548 that I found in the clearance bin at Sears. I much preferred the PPC over the Palm and at the time the Axim became available I was about a week away from buying a $700 IPaq.

It seems that in the last 4-6 months that programmers have started to expand the market into the PPC realm and the games that are coming out are of a higher quality. Taking into consideration the size of the screen and the limitation of the processor and memory on a device, obviously you aren't going to see Halflife for the PPC anytime soon. The games that are coming out now though seen to be adapated well to the system and work great. The Axim is a nice 'pocket' gaming device but it's real value is in it ability to run not only games but all the other uses it has.

The other thing I strongly suggest is that you spend a few extra dollars and buy a good screen protector ( I use a Brando). If you are going to be doing anything that uses repetitive keystrokes you will mark up your screen, no matter how careful you are. The screen on my Jornada wore out in three months (mostly from solitaire), even though I treated very well, because I never used a screen protector. Learning my lesson the hard way, my Axim had one from day one.

As for the controls, they aren't perfect, but as long as your device doesn't have any physical problems, they work fine for what they are intended. My biggest complaint is that if you have the center button enabled it can be easy to activate it by accident when you are using the d-pad.

That all said, once you discover all the uses your new little toy has, you won't regret your purchase.

The Axim is one of the best PocketPc's out today for gaming. The Axim controls make it so that you can press more than 1 button at the same time (which many ppc's dont have), also it is fast (especcially the 400mhz one) and I overclocked it to 500mhz!! There are also A LOT of Amazing games out for the ppc.

Is the D-pad suppose to be difficult to push in the up direction or can I declaire mine defective? Because I have noticed that i have to push up until I feel a click and it will then register a up.

I am not sure, the D-Pad is a little "iffy" but I haver never had a problem that drastic with it. That sounds like it is defective to me
