Pocket 4000 A.D. anybody tried it yet?
Just curious if anybody here as tried the new Pocket 4000 A.D. game yet?
It looks like it just got released, but before I plunk down the cash I wanted to hear from a fellow AXIM user if they like it...
Thanks in advance! :icon_band

Hey Telengard,
Yeah, I've been looking forward to this game for a long time now and just bought it today. The problem is, the game doesn't seem to run on my Axim x50v! It will run, the developers say, with the .NET compact framework v2 beta installed.... but I can't get that to install on my Axim! So... anyone out there who has seen this problem before, Telengard and I would love some help. Thanks!

runs on my x50v just fine... though once you run it, it locks the exe even after you exit..
I tried to install to sd card but it ignored the setting and installed to main mem... i exited the app and tried to move the folder to the card but the exe wold not move, I had to reset the device in order to get it moved over... is the app not exiting properly? but it runs just great, just need to spend more time in learning exactly how to play..

Thanks Darhorn,
The producers of the game have been more than helpful in helping me to fix the problem. Mine is still not working but I have no doubt that it will in time. Dar, Telen, what versions of the .net framework are you using? Maybe that's the key.

IIRC, you have .NET 1.0SP3 if you have an X50v and you've never installed any upgrade. You'll need .NET 2 for this.

Same problem here (framework). I managed to get it to work once (after installing the beta framework), but now I'm again getting the framework error.
That's atrocious for software that has been in development for something like one year and a half...
If you manage to get it working, then the game is great (Masters of Orion-like), although the interface could use a few improvements.

How do the graphics look on the X50v? From the screenshots they don't look like they're VGA.
Thanks,
Josh

Okay, the game looks good on the x50 (much better than in the shots) but they certainly didn't create a separate VGA version of the game. Maybe in time we'll see one. BTW I loaded .NET v2 BETA and then did a hard reset and it works fine for me with no crashes.

Just a little tip if you still have problem after installing the .NET v2 Beta framework. Since both versions (the one integrated in ROM and the v2) are installed at the same time, it may be that a program loaded before Pocket 4000 AD (for example a Today plugin) is loading the old version of the framework.
I had the problem, and I solved it by doing a soft-reset after deactivating my Today plugins.

how is the space combat in it? The information I've read about it have kinda glossed it over or skipped it completely.

This is a strategy game so the combat is not so much like a shooter would be. There are many ways of combat in the game like attacking planets directly with ion beams and missiles to sabotaging. But you can also simply attack a planet by loading a ship with mechs and troops, scanning an enemy planet, and sending the ship off to that planet. You can also defend your own planets and ships. I like planning and strategizing missions as well as the whole planet management thing to evolve my own empire. The game is a must-have if you happen to like graphical strategy games but it's not really a wear your PDA buttons down shoot-em-up type as the whole basis in turn based.

Just received e-mail back from devs confirming they will be developing a VGA version of the game :approve: They claim it will be a free update for current VGA owners of the game and will be priced the same as the PPC version for new VGA users.

I would first settle for a working version of the game (one that wouldn't require me to soft-reset with my Today plugins disabled in order to play). Also using default Windows dialog boxes for a game 2 years or so in the making is a bit "unpolished" .

Yeah, I guess the game works fine for me because I haven't any Today plugins. I agree about the dialog boxes too but I've overlooked them due to the gameplay and graphics. Maybe the VGA version will not require you to have to disable plugins.
