thanks Joe. Looks pretty good. I hope that iguidance also gets their WM5 update in soon. they are going to lose a lot of business if they keep going so slowly with the updates.

How difficult is it to change maps between regions?

Hi,

One thing that concerns me with OCN5 is how easy or difficult it is to change between regions on a long trip. If I am traveling from SC to NJ, for example, I will have to load at least two regions. I believe the driving is seamless within each region but not between the two regions. What is involved in switching between the two loaded regions while traveling? What about loading another region while traveling, what is involved?

Hi rcartlidge,

3 options:

1) With OCN5 (L): You will just copy the 2 regions map onto your Storage card and as you drive across bordering state on the "South Eastern USA" region, you will do a switch map and click the "Northern East Coast USA" region map and enter your desitnation address in NJ.

2) You could get the OCN5 (XL) Seamless USA map and you will have complete lower 48 states loaded to your PDA. This allow you to hit the road with no more map download or map switching.

3) Or you could get the OCN5 (L) for now and purchase the North America - additional Major Region which covers the complete East Coast USA maps here: http://www.oncoursenavigator.com/item.aspx?itemid=8008

MAJOR Eastcoast USA
Includes the following states as a complete seamless map:
Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia

Activating this map will also grant the use of the following maps:
Puerto Rico, Central Northeastern USA, Central East Coast USA, South Eastern USA, Northern East Coast USA

Is it true, also, that if I own the OCN5 (L) version and wanted to upgrade to the complete seamless USA later on (XL), that is possible? At what cost?

Hi,

One last question,(thanks for the speedy response) if I read this correctly, if I have the (L) package, and wanted to upgrade to either a Major mapping region or to the entire seamless USA mapping region, the price for both is about the same? Around $70? Secondly, I believe you have access to all Major regions if I buy the (XL) package?

rcartlidge:

Correct for both. If you already have OCN5 (L), you will get maximum benfits of upgrading thru Package B.

Yes, you get access to all regional maps in OCN5 (L), 3 major region maps (except: Canada and Northern USA) and the seamless USA map.

OK, I promise this is it! Do i have to install ALL of the regional maps on my Axim X30 if I get the (L) package? How much memory would that take if that is the case?

No, you don't have to install all of the maps, you can install one or more regions of your choice. If you need to change, you can remove and install regions as you go.

Jake,

Thanks for your input; all these little details......! It seems as though many changes in GPS technology and software is underway and I am trying to make a decision based on facts, not hype.

Jake is correct. In OCN5 (L), USA is broken into 7 regional maps and Canada is all by itself as one region map.

USA regional maps are designed to maximize the available space of a 256MB SD / CF Storage card. Due to this, their size is on average about 225MB.

If you will be travelling to 2 regions on a specific trip, we recommend you get at least a 512MB HIGH SPEED cards.

The map size of every possible maps in OCN5 is clearly marked in the OCN5 Introduction page under "CleverMap Concept" section:
http://www.oncoursenavigator.com/intro.aspx#3

Hope this helps and please feel free to ask any questions.
